The Committee divided the area of its selection into four sections chronologically but, when appropriate, overlapping so as to follow through each major ware across the dynastic boundaries. The four sections demarcated cover the following periods: (a) from neolithic to the T'ang and Liao dynasties; (b) Sung and Yuan dynasties; (c) Yuan and Ming dynasties; and (d) Ch'ing dynasty. The overlapping is particularly noticeable in the two middle sections. In Section (b), the Yuan wares which follow the Sung tradition, such as the celadons, are included; while in Section (c) the Yuan wares included are the shu fu, blue and white and allied wares of Ching-tê Chên, which form the basis of most of the Ming porcelains.…

The remaining interior show minor signs of wear.; Lacquer when set is one of the most durable of all vegetable products. Usually made from the latex of Rhus verniciflua, the lacquer tree, it has been described as the "most ancient industrial plastic know to man", and it has been in constant use in China for over three thousand years. It has inspired Chinese craftsmen to produce works of art that are almost unrivalled for their delicacy, variety and aesthetic appeal. Sir Harry Garner's important book is the first systematic study of this bafflingly complex study. The greater part of the book deals with lacquerwares that were made from the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368) onwards. Not only was that dynasty rich in new and long-lasting techniques such as carving - which was to become the most popular technique of all - the inlaying with mother of pearl, and infilling incised decoration with gold, but for the earlier periods the material surviving is much more scanty. However, fine pieces dating from the Han, T'ang and Sung dynasties are illustrated and discussed, and the first products from as far back as the Shang dynasty are identified. After surveys of the nature and preparation of lacquer, the copious Chinese literature and the early laquerwares, the general arrangement is by techniques. In addition to chapters on the techniques already mentioned there are further ones on marbled lacquer, surface gold-decorated lacquer, painted lacquer, and "Coromandel" lacquer. Two full bibliographies separately listing the literature in Chinese and in European languages complete the book. Sir Harry Garner unique collection of lacquerwares from which the majority of the illustrations were taken was divided between the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.…
