Some light dust soiling, heavier on title and verso of last leaf, browning mostly to margins and occasional spots. 19th century half calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered morocco label. Joints and extremities rubbed, small repair at head and foot. 20th century inscription to front pastedown, later monogram RC inked to title. The first edition in English of this poem on hunting by a contemporary of Virgil and Ovid. The translator's commentary includes chapters on "the styles of hunting different from the English, both antique and forreigne" and "the modern authors who have written upon this subject." The first edition in Latin had been published in Lyon by Sebastian Gryphius in 1537. First edition of this Aldine collection of poetical works on hunting and fishing. It contains the editiones principes of Gratius' De Venatione, Nemesianus' Cynegeticon and Eclogues, and the Heleutica, attributed to Ovid, alongside Titus Calpurnius Siculus' Bucolica and Adrian of Castello's Venatio. This book was printed by Aldus' son Paulus Manutius in the first year of his takeover and reinvigoration of the Aldine Press. This collection presents treatises and dialogues examining the practice and philosophy of hunting and fishing, and also pastoral poetry. The Heleutica is attributed to Ovid both in this edition and in the manuscript on which the edition is based. The attribution is, however, debated. Recent scholarship considers the poem to be a paraphrase by Pliny the Elder of a poem by an unknown original author. The editor of this Aldine publication was the German Humanist, bibliophile, and poet Georg von Logau (latinized to Georgius Logus, c.1500-1553). Logau was Prokurator of the German Nation at Bologna and secretary and councillor to Ferdinand I von Hapsburg. Logau's source for this edition was a transcript of an early medieval manuscript written, as Logau notes, in Lombard minuscule (p. 10). The manuscript was obtained in France by the scholar Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter (1506-1557), who presented a transcript of it to Logau in 1533 while he was studying Rome. EDIT16; Renouard p. 263. Later ink shelfmark and ownership inscription on initial blanks. Labels chipped, light rubbing on front pastedown from bookplate removal, small stain on top edge, sporadic foxing to contents, small patch of worming affecting front free endpaper and blanks.
