Zustand: Good. Folio. Original wraps. [50pp.]. Large fromat 23 color plates. 15 x 12 in. Unused. Katy Grannan's color portraits depict subjects the artist describes as "new pioneers," Northern Californians who struggle to define themselves under the scrutiny of relentless sunlight. California serves as both a literal and metaphorical backdrop for Grannan's new photographs. It is a mythical destination and a real end-point where sunshine illuminates both the abject and the joyful. In The Westerns, Grannan explores the uneasy relationship between fixed photographic portraiture and her subjects' mercurial identities. The photographs are replete with ambiguity and contradiction: they are evidence of an invented, unknowable self, confronting inescapable photographic description.Katy Grannan (b. 1969, Arlington, Massachusetts) was first recognized in 1998 for an intimate series of portraits of strangers she met through newspaper advertisements. Grannan worked for years throughout the northeast and produced several different series entitled Poughkeepsie Journal, Morning Call, Sugar Camp Road, and Mystic Lake, each referring to a local newspaper source or secluded location. Grannan's process and the consequent images are informed by her own childhood in the American northeast. Each photograph is imbued with secrecy, desire, and hidden intentions. With her move to California in 2006, Grannan photographed "new pioneers," people who, like herself, encountered something very different from the mythological "West" with its promise of eternal summer and personal reinvention. Instead, these new settlers face the end of a continent and the potential for failure as they struggle to define themselves under the scrutiny of the relentless Western sunlight. The Westerns explores the relationship between aspiration and delusion - where our shared desire to be of worth, to be paid some attention - confronts the uneasy prospect of anonymity.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 800 stamp-numbered copies. Four volumes sharing the following format: Printed, die-cut, French-fold wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Unpaginated (40 pp.), with black-and-white and four-color plates throughout. Photographs by Mark Steinmetz, Dru Donovan, Elaine Stocki and Katy Grannan. Designed by Paul Schiek. 8 x 6 inches. New in publisher's shrink wrap. From the publisher: "Mark Steinmetz's book Philip & Micheline documents the end of life as experienced by his parents. Steinmetz uses his camera to share the moments he has witnessed, within which viewers find an intimate portrait of a family's loss. Steinmetz was born in 1961; he received a BA from Wesleyan University and an MFA from Yale University. He has had numerous books published by Nazraeli and his work is in the collections of major museums across the United States including the New York Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Steinmetz received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1994 and now lives in Athens, Georgia where he spends most of his time making photo books. Dru Donovan presents an investigation of mourning in her book, Lifting Water. The tableaus explore the rituals of caregiving while shifting perspectives between the caregiver and the cared for. Donovan focuses on the psychological weight of physical proximity alongside emotional isolation. Donovan was born in 1981; she received a BFA in photography from California College of the Arts and an MFA in photography from Yale University, where she was awarded the Richard Benson prize for excellence. Donovan was included in Wallpaper Magazine's Graduate Directory of emerging talent to watch, her work is included in reGeneration2: Tomorrow's Photographers Today, published by Thames & Hudson and she will be included in the 2010 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art. Donovan now lives and works in San Francisco, California. Katy Grannan's book, N., coincides with Grannan's most recent work; making short films. N.'s cinematic, or time-based structure features Grannan's long-time subject, Nicole, whom after five years of collaborations determined it was time they make some 'real pictures.' These real pictures are a bold combination of theatricality, seduction and repulsion, and Grannan's obsessive and unrelenting photographs challenge our assumptions about the dynamic between artist and subject. Grannan was born in 1969; she received a BA from University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from Yale University. Grannan has been awarded The Baum Award for Emerging American Photographers and the Aperture Award to an Emerging Artist. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in the United States, Germany, Belgium and France, and is included in publications by Steidl, Aperture, Phaidon, Thames & Hudson. Grannan now lives in Berkeley, California. Elaine Stocki's Balcony is a unique exploration of uncertainty and poetic tensions. Stocki's images pose questions about psychological limitations as well as the chaos of human interactions yet stubbornly allows the viewer no answers. Stocki was born in 1979; she received a BS in chemistry and a BFA with honors in painting and photography from University of Manitoba and a MFA in photography from Yale University. Stocki was awarded the Tierney Fellowship as well as the Yale University School of Art Scholarship, Manitoba Arts Council Grant, ACADRE Fellowship Award and the Winnipeg Arts Council Travel Grant. Her work has been in exhibitions in numerous galleries in the United States as well as Germany and Canada.

Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "Katy Grannan's striking portraits capture the desire of her subjects to offer themselves up to the camera lens. Each of her well-known series"Poughkeepsie Journal," "Dream America," and "Morning Call"began with a simple ad placed by Grannan in local newspapers: "Art Models. Artist/Photographer (female) seeks people for portraits. No experience necessary. Leave msg." After an initial telephone conversation, Grannan travels to the caller's home. Photographing her models in their own surroundings, she pays meticulous attention to the elements of their domestic settings: wood paneling, patterned wallpaper, and other mundane but often telling details. The subjects choose to remain clothed, to model nude, or to pause somewhere in between, working with Grannan to arrive at the pose. The resulting images reflect the intensity of the relationship between artist and model. With subjects centrally framed and directly facing the camera, each image resonates with the tension of a first encounter. In Grannan's series "Sugar Camp Road" and her most recent work, she moves the exercise outdoors, using a municipal park as the backdrop. Even though the parklands that serve as her set bring the private encounters of her earlier series into the public landscape, she maintains a delicateyet chargedsense of intimacy."Katy Grannan is one of the most original and compelling portraitists working today. The last time I was this uncomfortable and thrilled by a book of portraits was when I first opened Diane Arbus's monograph thirty years ago." Volume One (NZL Set 3), and Volume Two (NZL Set 4, forthcoming) both function as stand-alone books; together, they tell a deeper story, playing off of each other and delving deeper into the lives and surroundings of their subjects. The photographs in Hundreds of Sparrows were made in the Central Valley, in particular, the sprawling cities of Modesto, Fresno, and Bakersfield that sit within this vast agricultural region in the geographical center of California. This location also served as the setting for Grannan's debut feature film, "The Nine", which premiered to wide critical acclaim in 2016. Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No dust jacket as issued. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Limited edition of 800 stamp-numbered copies. Each volume signed by the artist. Four volumes sharing the following format: Printed, die-cut, French-fold wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Unpaginated (40 pp.), with black-and-white and four-color plates throughout. Photographs by Mark Steinmetz, Dru Donovan, Elaine Stocki and Katy Grannan. Designed by Paul Schiek. 8 x 6 inches. Fine. From the publisher: Mark Steinmetz's book Philip & Micheline documents the end of life as experienced by his parents. Signed by Author.

ISBN 978-1-59005-480-2. 60 pp., with 26 duotone plates. From the publisher: " In 1964, a young Steve Banks bought one of the most coveted âMuscle Cars' on the marketâ"a Pontiac GTO with a four-speed stick and a Hurst shifter, Tri-Power, and three Rochester 2G carburetors. He then drove Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to begin his new advertising agency job. Gassing up one day at Nobo's Shell station at Beverly and Larchmont, Banks learned that Nobo had previously been head mechanic at the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership, and that his station had become a center for building and tuning street racers. On and off over the next few months, Banks would leave his car at the garage while Nobo fine-tuned the carburetors, replaced the stock tires, torsion, and sway bars, and added Koni shocks and a Sun tachometer. Next, he taught Banks how to âspeed shift'â"while making late night runs up and down Larchmont Boulevard. One day, Nobo mentioned he was going to a drag race that Saturday, and that Banks was welcome to come along. Witnessing his first drag race, Steve Banks was immediately hooked. He returned the following Saturday, and the next, and again the next; but this time with with his cameras. Over the course of two years, Banks photographed guys preparing runs, the thundering nitro-burning dragsters launching down the strip at two hundred-plus miles per hour, and everything else that moved. Today, fifty years later, the sport of drag racing is a big bucks, corporate-sponsored television broadcast business with the NHRA sporting over two hundred different drag racing classes. However, in a nod to the sport's modest beginnings, almost every weekend from coast-to-coast one can find ânostalgia racing' events preserving the dragster culture of the 1960s captured here in NITRO, Drag Racing In The Sixties: 1964â"1966." Heyliger, Cuban-born artist Abelardo Morell has famously designed a light proof tent that, via periscope type optics, makes it possible to project a view of the nearby landscape onto whatever ground is under the tent. Inside this darkened space he uses a view camera to record the effect. This Tent-Camera now liberates Morell to use camera obscura techniques in a world of new places. VOLUME THREE: Anthony Hernandez: Discarded. ISBN 978-1-59005-452-9. 68 pp., with 35 four-color plates. From the publisher: "The title of Anthony Hernandez's monograph takes its name from our collective penchant for discarding what we no longer find useful; in this case, unfinished houses and the land on which they sit, to the east and northeast of Los Angeles. The project arose from the 2008 recession, which hit California particularly hard, when homebuilders and owners faced loans and mortgages that were worth more than their properties. Comprising 35 photographs made in desert and high desert cities such as Riverside, Salton City, Lancaster and Palmdale, Discarded opens with an essay by John Rohrbach, Senior Curator of Photography at the Amon Carter Museum where the work was first exhibited in 2016. Of the photographs, Rohrbach writes: "Where through the 1970s and 1980s the 'New Topographics' generation led by Robert Adams and Lewis Baltz drew photographic attention to the expansion of suburbia across the open West, Anthony Hernandez now asks us to take account of the failures, the pulling back from over-exuberant expectation. Capitalism, of course, is built on optimism and growth, but just as central to its being is failure. We can't all be winners; bust inevitably follows boom. While some initiatives survive, others go under, abandoned to the banks and discarded to the scourges of time and happenstance. The subject offers pathos and an enticing undercurrent of violence. But where others generally embrace the romance of the struggle against the harsh climate, emphasizing isolation and self-sufficiency, Hernandez reminds us of the.
