Bohn, London, 1846. * a very attractive binding. Binder's name stamp but hard to read as blurred.

Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). An historical work on the court of Charles the Second. Lacking title page and frontispiece. This work is Bohn's 'Extra Volume' as the publisher doubted 'the propriety of including Count Grammont's Memoirs in his 'standard library''. This is because the work, despite being praised as 'a classic work, the delight of every man and woman of taste', is full of 'curious historical information'. To the leaf on the verso of the half-title, Bohn questions if this work meets up to the standard of other works in his library series which is why it is published as an 'extra volume'. This work was originally claimed by Antoine Hamilton to have been dictated to him by Philibert, Count de Gramont, however it is likely that Hamilton was the true author. Gramont was the protagonist of these memoirs. This particular edition is edited by Sir Walter Scott. This work made Hamilton one of the classical writers of France. In a half vellum binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the joints and t o the extremities. Handling marks and a few small tidemarks to the spine. Vellum has dulled. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, R B Colvin. First three leaves are loosening. Rear hinge is strained but firm. Final two leaves are loosening to the tail of pages. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spotting to pages. Good. book.

In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with stub from mount adhering. Beneath Hamilton's signature at the foot of the document is a fair impression of his seal in red wax. The document reads: 'Nous le Sieur d'Hamilton Capn. Comandant du Regiment de Monsieur le Comt d'Hamilton Certifions que le porteur de ce present Antoin Joinar nous a bien et fidellement Servie en tous les occasions qui se sont presentes, estant apresent agé et incapable de plus Servire, apres avoir esté blaisé au dite Service, nous luy avons donné le present Certificat pour se retirer a l'hostel des Invalides [?] en foys de quoy nous avons Signé le presente'. The context is explained in Hamilton's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'Anthony Hamilton joined his brother George in France in 1667, and was given a captain's commission in the French army. In 1671 he and his younger brother Richard joined a regiment of foot which George raised in Ireland for the service of Louis XIV. They served in the Franco-Dutch War of 16728.' On 12 x 19 cm piece of vellum. In good condition, with spike hole and bottom corners snipped. Entire document in French. The main text consists of ten lines of text in a stylized secretarial hand, with Hamilton's split signature at the bottom: the word 'Anthoine' being at the bottom left, and the word 'Hamilton' at bottom right. Autograph description by Hamilton on the reverse: 'Pour servir de quittance de la somme de quatre cens cinquante livures pour mes appointements de cappitaine au Regimant D'Hamilton pandant les six mois de campagne de lannée 1675'.
