The authors describe an approach conceived almost a generation ago and developed through years of clinical experience with the mentally ill. An outgrowth of the practice of milieu therapy, the hospital community idea and the use of the psychiatric hospital as a therapeutic instrument have led increasingly to a better understanding of the human relationships between patients and staff. Simply put, the way people treat each other, how HUMAN they are, takes on a new significance and opens new horizons. The hospital is a social structure and one must be mindful of this if one is to understand the course mental disorder takes within the confines of the hospital community. We must be aware of the human qualities of the patient, and know the methods or social systems which strengthen them.
