Exceedingly clean and sharp, DJ price clipped. Shipped professionally in a box. ''Humanizing the Psychiatric Hospital' is the result of many years of thought and work about the humanizing potential of the psychiatric hospital. The authors describe an approach conceived almost a generation ago and developed through years of clinical experience with the mentally ill. An outgrowth of the practice of milieu therapy, the hospital community idea and the use of the psychiatric hospital as a therapeutic instrument have led increasingly to a better understanding of the human relationships between patients and staff. Simply put, the way people treat each other, how HUMAN they are, takes on a new significance and opens new horizons. The hospital is a social structure and one must be mindful of this if one is to understand the course mental disorder takes within the confines of the hospital community. We must be aware of the human qualities of the patient, and know the methods or social systems which strengthen them. The challenge is to provide hospital psychiatry with a social perspective without diminishing its clinical foundation. The hospital psychiatrist's concern for the patient must go beyond treating his medical symptoms. Dr. Gralnick points out that positive home and family conditions are essential to the patient's stability. The use of family therapy in the psychiatric hospital, for example, contributes significantly to successfully treating the patient's mental illness. The authors advocate care and concern for the patient and devotion to the positive treatment of him as a human being, not just as a patient. Dr. Gralnick, Medical Director, as well as the thirteen contributing authors, were at High Point Hospital in Port Chester, New York.' (Publisher's blurb).
