The USS Mississippi had initially served as part of Perry's expedition, but returned to the China Sea in 1857, captained by William Nicholson, to protect American interests during the Second Opium War. The present account of the voyage by a surgeon's steward on board includes an eyewitness account of the First Battle of Taku Forts, a description of the installation of the first U.S. Minister to Japan, and a first-hand account of being among the first Westerners allowed to spend a night in Tokyo's imperial district.
