Plate at rear. 2 columns Syriac text with facing Latin translation, else Latin. Large quarto, early 3/4 dark brown leather with brown cloth boards. Some rubbing at the extremities, normal wear to the covers, top of spine a little pulled and rubbed away. Interior has book plate of noted Orientalist and Old Testament scholar S.H. Hooke, ghost of the bookplate on the first free end paper. Paper lightly toned but otherwise clean and unmarked. When Rene Graffin (1858-1941) became aware of the wealth of Syriac mss. in both Paris and London, he conceived the idea of founding the series Patrologia Syriaca. This is the first edition of the first volume, with a nice provenance. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
