Cover & Title Page Designed by Grace Barton Allen. (illustrator). Very Good (covers nice, contents clean & tight with small bookplate on the front pastedown, pasted over an old ink signature. Small 8vo., decorative light-green cloth, deckled edges, stamped in gilt, black & red; 313 pages First Edition. Signed by Akers on the title page. It appears Akers signed every copy of this title, which is a scarce book and I doubt many were produced. I have researched the two signed copies I have in stock and each signature varies slightly- they are not printed facsimilies. Akers was a Maine poet and journalist. She published early poems under the name Florence Percy. She was editor of the Portland Advertiser for many years. She was also a nurse and a government clerk during the civil war. 2 lines that she penned were popular during the civil war. "Backward, turn backward, O time in thy flight, Make me a child again, just for to-night". Signed.
ALLEN, Grace Barton (illustrator). AKERS, Elizabeth. THE SUNSET SONG AND OTHER VERSES. Boston: Lee & Shepard, 1902. Cover & Title Page Designed by Grace Barton Allen. 8vo., turquoise-blue cloth, stamped in gilt, black & red; top edge gilt. First Edition. Signed by Akers on the title page. Elizabeth Anne Chase Akers Allen [1832-1911] was a poet and newspaper woman born in Strong, Maine. She was a popular contributor to many national periodicals and also wrote under the pen name "Florence Percy." Her best-known poem "Rock Me To Sleep" became the subject of a lawsuit over authorship, with Akers vindicated but only after the case raged on in the public eye. Very Good (contents clean & tight). $85.00.
