Acta Physio, 7+9 - Stockholm, P.a. Norstedt & Söner, 1944, 8°, 12 pp.; 1945, 27, (1) pp., orig. Broschur. Dextran one of the Most Important Advances in Medicine since the discovery of Penicillin! FIRST EDITIONS of both papers in the original wrappers, of which apparently only a small number of copies where printed. Both signed by the authors. "Dextran must be classed as one of the most important advances in medicine since World War II" (Prof. T. G. Blocker, Jr.) "Attempts had been made at an early date to replace lost blood volume with different artificial colloids in isotonic salt Solutions . During the Second World War the need for blood and plasma was enormous. In the USA efforts were concentrated on the fractionation of plasma for production of albumin Solutions. Large quantities of blood were collected . for the American troops. When in 1944 Grönwall and Ingelman came forward with the excellent idea of using dextran for preparing a plasma-expanding Solution, new possibilities were opened. Dextran, which is a waste product in the processing of sugar from sugar-beets, is constructed solely of glucose molecules. It could be prepared industrafly in unlimited amounts and was not antigenic." (Lars Thoren, Fluid Therapy in Shock, A Historical Survey, 1979). Garrison & Morton 2028.
