Neuware - Songs for South London In his new paintings Nick Goss seems to aim at the modus of memory; how at any given time it necessarily contains more than one place, more than one logic. On the other it's easy to read Goss's works within the logic of the modernist collage, or the cubist compulsion for cutting up. In his canvas »Last of England« a throng of people are trapped in Weimaresque fashion as if inside a shattered mirror - a bag, a scarf, something carried under an arm all pieces on the same flat plane. But spend more time with them and the effect is not, as in Hoch's surreal assemblages or Kirchner's brash streetscapes, one of alienation, or disorientation. I see the people in Nick Goss's new paintings rather as strangers silently believed in, invested with grace. Fragmentation in these works, then, might better be understood, like in music, as a kind of sampling. There's humour in the detachment, as there is, in Goss's paintings, always something more to what we see, however flat or rotten or wasted it may seem. It was fun at the bowling alley until it wasn't anymore . On y reconnaît cependant facilement, d'un autre côté, la logique du collage moderniste ou de la contrainte cubiste de découper les objets. Son tableau « Last of England » montre par exemple un groupe d'individus coincés sur la toile d'une manière qui rappelle la République de Weimar, comme vus dans un miroir éclaté - un sac, une écharpe, un objet porté sous le bras forment autant d'éléments sur une seule et unique surface plane. En les observant plus longuement, l'effet produit n'aboutit cependant pas, comme dans les assemblages surréalistes de Höch ou les rues sèches de Kirchner, à la distanciation ou la désorientation. Je vois plutôt les personnages des nouveaux tableaux de Nick Goss comme des étrangers en lesquels quelqu'un croit silencieusement, remplis de dignité. La fragmentation de ces oeuvres pourrait donc être plus vue comme un genre de sampling tel que la musique le pratique. Cette distanciation révèle un certain humour, comme les tableaux de Goss, et ce que nous voyons dissimule bien plus encore, aussi plat, moisi ou vain que cela paraisse. Andererseits ist es einfach, in den Arbeiten von Nick Goss die Logik der modernistischen Collage oder des kubistischen Zwangs, Dinge auseinanderzuschneiden, zu erkennen. In seinem Bild »Last of England« ist ein Pulk von Leuten in einer an die Zeit der Weimarer Republik erinnernden Art und Weise auf der Leinwand eingekeilt, als sehe man sie in einem zersprungenen Spiegel - eine Tasche, ein Schal, etwas unter dem Arm Getragenes sind alles Teile auf derselben planen Ebene. Betrachtet man sie länger, ist der Effekt nicht wie bei Höchs surrealen Assemblagen oder Kirchners spröden Straßenlandschaften derjenige der Verfremdung oder Desorientierung. Ich sehe die Menschen in den neuen Bildern von Nick Goss eher als Fremde, an die jemand still glaubt, die mit Würde ausgestattet sind. Die Fragmentierung in diesen Werken ließe sich somit besser als eine Art von Sampling verstehen, wie in der Musik. In dieser Distanzierung steckt Humor, wie auch in Goss' Bildern, und hinter dem, was wir sehen, liegt viel mehr verborgen, wie flach oder vergammelt oder vergeblich es auch erscheinen mag. Along with around sixty plates and illustrations, the publication features an essay by writer, journalist, and critic Hettie Judah, and an in-conversation between Goss, fellow painter Michael Armitage, and writer Thomas Marks.'Smickel Inn is a real place in an unreal place,' writes Judah, 'a snack bar on an outer extremity of the port of Rotterdam.' It's a venue that is popular with port workers and sailors--a clientele of regular and transitory people often involved in sea freight or oil shipping, though their lives, personalities, and stories are largely played out in Goss's mixed-media paintings through the bar's interior décor: an old vase with fresh flowers, a stack of glass ashtrays, a well-worn piano with a pile of books on top, an eclectic selection of picture frames with faded scenes, and a clock that might only be right twice a day. Filtered through Goss's imagination, Smickel Inn carries its history with it, much of it decorating the countertop; it's a venue that charms with its informality--a place that knows itself, and its disparate customers. In real life, the bar has a cinematic view of the port and the North Sea, translated here, through Goss's creative process of painting and silk-screening, into a scene from an engraving of seventeenth-century Sicily. Fragments from different places and eras infiltrate his images, creating a patina of palimpsests, visual echoes, perhaps, of memories of travelers coming through the port.The body of work takes us around the wider Dutch coastline and beyond - we see passengers on foot disembarking a ferry, have a backseat view of a car ride around the village of Stavenisse, and join a night-time campfire on the beach at Scheveningen, among other more mysterious, if not abstruse, locations and scenarios. Observation from contemporary life mingles with visual culture spanning centuries and continents in Goss's oeuvre, creating lyrical yet strangely haunting and melancholic paintings, trapped in time somewhere between personal experience and collective memory.
