Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This commentary by Frank Gorman shows how Leviticus, though focusing largely on matters associated with the Levitical priesthood, is also important to laypeople. Gorman addresses the question of Israelite identity and what it means to be people of God. Through a careful application of exegesis and exposition, he shows that Leviticus is, foremost, a call to holiness, a weaving together of ritual and ethical issues to provide the community with a means for enacting and actualizing covenant relationship.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Morre, Scott (illustrator). Neuware - In 1940, when the Germans invaded France, many independent résistance cells were formed in France. Initially, these résistance cells provided only minimum opposition to the Germans. The opposition was in the form of strikes, bureaucratic delays, and occasional vandalism. What the French Résistance needed was coordination, weapons, and training. To provide all groups that were resisting the Germans, the British formed the office of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). The SOE started training agents who were either flown or parachuted into the occupied territories. Through the 1941-1942 period, the résistance cells were provided short wave radios, weapons, and SOE covert agents, which provided training. Beginning in 1942, the Allies were engaged in bombing the Germans in the occupied territories. The bombing runs resulted in Allied planes being shot down. This, in turn, resulted in Allied fliers parachuting behind enemy lines. The French résistance would find some of the downed fliers before the Germans. The résistance formed a series of safe houses to move the downed fliers through France and into Spain. From Spain, the fliers were taken to the British consulates. From the consulates, the fliers were transported back to England via sea transport. The résistance was credited with saving hundreds of fliers through this underground network.

/ Words & music by Vernon T. Stevens. Cover: Sung by Rev. Frank W. Gorman (The Singing Parson) at Fuller's Vaudeville Theatres. Melbourne : L.F. Collin Pty. Ltd., [c.1920]. Series: Collin's popular sixpenny edition. Folio, front cover with photographic portrait of Frank Gorman and original owner's name 'Vera Bangs' (light foxing and edge tears), 3 pp, music notation (arrangement for voice and piano). Rev. Frank W. Gorman was an American religious minister from Oregon who toured Australia in 1920. The following article was publishedin The Advertiser (Adelaide), 16 February 1920: 'REV. FRANK W. GORMAN.THE SINGING PARSON.The first thing that strikes one about theSinging Parson (the Rev. Frank WalterGorman), who opened for a season at theMajestic Theatre on Saturday, is the intensely practical nature of his religion. Hisideal is the personality of Jesus Christ forthe people as opposed to the Church's view.In an interview on Saturday morning Mr.Gorman said, 'My sermons are likely toscare people, as also is my theology, butthere is nothing rude, nothing coarse, nothing gross in it. It is a plain heartspoken message to the soul of the listenerwith a punch in it to send it home. Ifpeople come to listen to me who are afraidof home truths they had better stay away.I don't want to frighten people, but I dowant to straighten out the Church, andyou know it does sorely need straighteningout in every direction. In far too manychurches the man of means has pitched histent, and by his donation to the pastor'ssalary, his contributions in costly carpets, pipe organs and brilliant chandeliers, hassilenced the voice of the man who shouldstand in the pulpit as the Oracle of God.I went into vaudeville work because I amnaturally an artist and because theChurch didn't pay a living wage. Now thatI am being paid a salary by the largetheatrical combine which enables meto live comfortably I can preach andmake no charge for doing so, and at thesame time I am independent of everybodyin the giving out of the Master's greatmessage to them. I believe, and believeintensely, in a religion of the streets, fora heaven beyond the stars is too far awayfor the majority of people to enjoy.Heaven and hell are states here and now.I am English born, my native placebeing Plymouth, and yet from infancy Ihave always been American.'Mr. Gorman began to preach at the ageof 14 years at Botus Fleming, in Cornwall. Some 'time afterwards he read Paine's'Age of Reason' and a book on the 'Immaculate Conception of Christ,' and hewas driven to agnosticism and lost faith. For six years he criticised sermons andlooked for discrepancies in the Bible, until September 13, 1906, when light came tohim and the following Saturday night hewas preaching on the streets.' Scarce. The National Library of Australia holds the only copy of this sheet music recorded in Australian collections.
