The poem was an important influence on Tolkien: he produced his own verse translation (published posthumously in 1975) and he described the original as "one of the masterpieces of fourteenth-century art in England, and of English literature as a whole" (Tolkien, p. 72). The text, written in a north-west Midlands dialect, is here reproduced from the sole surviving manuscript held at the British Library, alongside copious notes and glossaries by Tolkien and his co-editor E. V. Gordon. The edition "opened new fields of study, remaining the standard, in revised form, throughout the 20th century" (ODNB). Hammond B7a. J. R. R. Tolkien, The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays, 1984. Octavo. Photographic frontispiece and plate reproducing pages of the manuscript; errata leaf tipped-in after p. vi, as issued. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, axe vignette and single frame to front cover in gilt, edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Ownership signature of Dorothy White, dated 1929, to front free endpaper. Spots to covers and edges; jacket unpriced as issued, spine and folds toned and rubbed, faint crease to front panel, nicks to extremities: a very good copy in very good jacket.…
