Although presented as "memoirs," the book was written by Anthony Hamilton (c.1646-1720), Gramont's brother‑in‑law, who shaped the Count's anecdotes into a literary portrait of Restoration court life. The memoirs follow Gramont's adventures in France, Turin, and England, focusing on court politics, love affairs, duels, gossip, and social manoeuvring. They remain one of the most vivid literary windows into the Restoration era.
