SEA CHART OF THE HOLLAND COAST WITH BROAD FOURTEENS "Cust van Hollant tusschen de Maes ende Texel", copper engraving published by Pieter Goos in 1667 as part of "De Zee-Atlas, Ofte Water-Weereld, Waer in vertoont werden alle de Zee-Kusten Van het bekende des Aerd-Bodems". Coloured by a later hand. Size: 42.3 x 52.5 cm. This sea chart shows the coast of Holland from the Maas to Texel. The chart is laid out in the tradition of 17th-century chartmakers, with a network of rhumb lines and bearings serving as practical aids to navigation. Sandbanks, such as the Broad Fourteens ("De Bree Veerthien"), are carefully indicated, as they were vital for sailors approaching the shallow coastal waters of Holland. The depth of fourteen fathoms of this sandbank was so distinctive that sailors considered themselves safe when, in poor visibility, they measured that depth. Danger arose when they found greater depth: then they were in the coastal channel and risked running aground. Moreover, the sandbank broke the waves of the North Sea, although the water there was still more than twenty metres deep. Ships obliged to wait offshore often did so at the Broad Fourteens. For example, when fleets and convoys departed from the Texel roadstead, they had to wait until all ships had set sail; the Broad Fourteens were the designated anchorage for this purpose. Charts such as this one were sold by Goos both individually and as part of his atlas, which appeared in various editions and gained international renown. Pieter Goos (16161675), from a prominent Amsterdam family of mapmakers, created with his Zee-Atlas a standard work for merchants, naval officers, and shipowners in the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic. The map is further enlivened with decorative elements such as compass roses, an ornate title cartouche, and a ship under full sail. Price: Euro 750,-. …

PASKAARTEN VAN MARSDIEP EN MONDING VAN DE MAAS "De Texelstroom met de gaten vant Marsdiep" met een inzetkaart van de kust van West-Friesland tussen Enkhuizen en Medemblik, op één blad met een "Caart van de Mase, ende het Goereesche Gat". Kopergravure uitgegeven door Pieter Goos te Amsterdam in 1672 als deel van "De zee-atlas ofte water-wereld." Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (plaatrand): 43 x 53 cm. Paskaarten werden in de 17e-eeuws gebruikt voor navigatie op zee. Je kon er je de koers op bepalen en afgelegde afstanden op af passen. Paskaarten zoals deze toonden een topografische weergave van kustlijnen, rivieren en eilanden en waren voorzien van een netwerk van kompaslijnen of loxodromen. Ook aangegeven ankerplaatsen, ondieptes, banken, tonnen en vaarinstructies, hielpen zeevaarders op weg. Het Marsdiep tussen Texel en Den Helder, was een cruciaal doorvaartgebied voor schepen die vanuit de Noordzee naar de Zuiderzee (of andersom) wilden varen. Op het rechterdeel van de kaart zien we de Maasmonding, het gebied rondom de huidige haven van Rotterdam, met het eiland Voorne-Putten en de omliggende wateren. De in het gebied gelegen getijdengeulen waren van belang voor de scheepvaart van en naar de belangrijke havens. Net als bij het Marsdiep worden ook hier dieptes aangegeven in vadems, van belang voor het navigeren door deze soms ondiepe en verraderlijke wateren. Ook zandbanken zijn ook in dit deel van de kaart duidelijk aangegeven, wat de complexiteit van de navigatie in dit gebied benadrukt. Stuurlui moesten zorgvuldig navigeren om niet vast te lopen. De eerste eigen zeemansgids van Pieter Goos (1616-1675) verscheen in 1650. Gedurende 25 jaar gaf hij goed samengestelde zeemansgidsen en vanaf 1666 fraaie atlassen uit. Bijna alle kaarten hierin waren kopieën van Hendrick Donckers' zeekaarten (zo ook de kaart van het Marsdiep en de Maasmonding). In 1672 publiceerde hij de atlas die wordt aangemerkt als een van de beste maritieme atlassen van die tijd, "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Wereld, Waer in vertoont werden all de Zee-Kusten Van het bekende des Aerd-Bodems. FAMOUS MAP OF THE DUCHY OF BRABANT "Brabantia Ducatus." Copper engraving by Abraham Goos, published in Amsterdam by Claes Jansz. Visscher in 1622. 2nd state (of 11). Coloured by a later hand. Size 46 × 56.5 cm. The Duchy of Brabant was at the time an extensive territory, stretching far beyond the borders of present-day Belgium and the Netherlands. Much of it was then sparsely populatedlands where wars were fought and territories were gained or lost. The map was published shortly after the Twelve Years' Truce. Visscher incorporated unfolding news events, and the map appeared, repeatedly updated, in no fewer than eleven different states. This particular example shows the punitive expedition led by Prince Frederik Hendrik from Breda to Rustenburg near Leuven between 15 and 22 May 1622, and the devastation of enemy territory, symbolized by countless plumes of smoke rising from burning villages between Leuven and Brussels. In Brabant, the Eighty Years' War was primarily a conflict between Catholics and Protestants. It was a war of fortressescities were captured and recaptured, and borders shifted constantly. Most of Brabant's inhabitants remained loyal to the Spanish king; they did not regard the army of the Prince of Orange as liberators, but as occupiers. After eighty years of warfare, the Peace of Münster was finally signed in 1648. The duchy was divided in two: southern Brabant remained under Spanish rule, while the northern part became part of the Dutch Republic. Above and below the map image are city views of Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp, 's-Hertogenbosch, Tienen, Bergen op Zoom, Lier, Helmond, Breda, and Mechelen. In the upper corners are portraits of Archduke Albrecht VII of Austria and his wife Isabella of Spain, who jointly ruled the Habsburg Netherlands from 1598 to 1621. To the left and right of the map appear an aristocratic couple, a merchant and his wife, a farmer and his wife, and a man and woman dressed in the costume of Mechelen.
