First French Edition. Octavo. 22.5cm. Bound in later full institutional calf, titled in gilt to spine. 298pp.;[1]. Strong and bright, some mild scuffing and scratching of the leather in places; internally clean and fresh, edges speckled red, armorial bookplate to front flyleaf. #778 of a limitation of 1500, illustrated throughout with woodcuts. A very good, handsome copy in an institutional or private library binding. A fascinating examination of the Tibetan Buddhist equivalent of what westerners might call Mystery plays, from one of the first Western scholars to explore Tibetan culture on the ground. Bacot was the first scholar to pay close attention to Tibetan grammar and linguistic traditions, and worked on translations of numerous ancient Tibetan works of literature, with the support and collaboration of Tibetan scholars like Gendun Chompel. Although published in 1921, no significant English translation was made until 1990.
