It seemed to me when I began this study that Hobbess attempt to create a philosophic system encompassing both natural and political science had been neither understood nor taken seriously by most commentators. I hope that this is no longer true. Treating Hobbess philosophy systematically forced me to study his method and his natural philosophy; understanding Hobbess political philosophy as a part, albeit the most interesting part, of his philosophic system required a review of his political writings. In the concluding chapter, I attempt to test my thesis by showing how Hobbess political science explains political phenomena. - M. M.
