A robust copy of the unusual first edition of Boston publisher Wells and Lilly's collection of essays by Oliver Goldsmith, Essays and The Bee (two volumes in one), featuring the later pictorial ex libris of library-loving Lee Zimmerman. This title appears to have been the third volume in Wells and Lilly's Select Edition of British Prose Writers series (1820); the WorldCat catalogue entry quotes a publisher's advert for the series, stating: "the first eleven volumes. Price to subscribers, $1 per volume," but adds: "Noted in Shoemaker with seven volumes, and in NUC pre-1956 with eight." Other authors published in the series included Robert Burns, Lords Bacon and Clarendon, Thomas Gray, Lady Rachel Russell and Horace Walpole. Each title was also issued separately by the publisher.
