Comparable to the popular Bernard & Huette manual of general surgery, with which it is contemporary, but dealing as fully with its subdivision as the former with the general subject, and slightly larger in format. Joseph Marie Achille Goffres (1808-1867), französischer Militärarzt, war am 17.Januar 1808 zu Toulose geboren, wurde 1828 Eleve im Instructions-Militär-Hospital zu Strassburg, ging 1830 als Souis-aide mit nach Algier, kehrte 1831 zurück, war in den Hospitälern von Calais und Lille thätig, wohnte der Belagerung der Citadelle von Antwerpen bei, wurde 1835 in Montpellier Doctor, stand daselbst als Aide-major in Garnison und wurde 1839 durch Concours Agrégé der dortigen Facultät für das Fach Chirurgie. Er schrieb in dieser Zeit im Journ. méd de Toulouse (1839-40, 1842): "Sur la ligature des artèries" - "De l'emphysème trine". Nach einem glänzenden Concurse erhielt er 1841 den Lehrstuhl der Chirurgie bei dem Instructions-Militär-Hospital in Metz, woselbst er, ebenso wie in den Schulen von Strassburg und im Val-de-Grâce, bis 1850 mit grossem Erfolge im Lehrfache thätig war. Zu der Zeit, wo er in Strassburg wirkte (1845 ff.), bearbeitete er für Sédillot's "Traité de médec. Opératoire" die Operationen an den Harnorganen des Mannes und Weibes. 1858 wurde er zum Chef-Chirurgen des Hôp. du Gros-Caillou in Paris ernannt und publicirte: "Sur le traitment des fractures des membres inférieurs par l'apparail de Baudens" (Bullet. de Thèrap.). 1852 ging er als Médicin principal nach Algier, kehrte 1855 zurück, leitete Spitäler in Montpellier, Toulon und von 1853 in Vincennes, nachdem er sein bekanntestes Werk, den "Précis iconographique de bandages, pansements et appareils" (Praris (1854, av. 81 pl.; 1858) herausgegeben hatte. Er war dann noch dreimal (1864, 65, 66) im Lager zu Châlons thätig und schrieb darüber: "Considérationes historiques, hygièniques et médicales, sur le camp de Châlons" (Paris 1865) und eine Reihe von Beobachtungen , die er im Rec. de mém.
