Zustand: Near Fine. 8vo. 29 pp. Title-page printed in black and orange. Original burnt-orange colored boards, original clear protective wrapper. NOT ex-library! A very useful and very readable account of the evidence -- and lack thereof -- supporting the argument that Johann Gutenberg was effectively the first "modern" printer in the West. Goff writes with authority, having been compiler of the indispensable "Third Census" of Incunabula in American Libraries. It is instructive to recall that by the end of the 15th century, "printing had been introduced into no less than 238 European communities and more than 1100 individual printers are known to have been operating these equally numerous presses during this 39-year interval" (p. 21). Designed by William R. Holman, this is one of 250 copies according to the colophon. First Edition, Second Impression, limited to 250 copies.

Paperback. 8vo. Stiff wrappers. vi, 30pp. Illustrations. Near fine. Handsome first edition of this address "Delivered on the occasion of the second annual Bromsen Lecture April 27, 1974" -- the second "Maury A. Bromsen Lecture in Humanistic Bibliography." Famed antiquarian bookseller and collector Bromsen (1919-2005), well known for his specialty in early Spanish colonial manuscripts, established this endowed lectureship. He boldly inscribes and signs the inside front wrapper in black fineline "Presented to Frank Hanlin / with every good wish from / his friend, / Maury A. Bromsen / Boston / May 4, 1976." (Frank S. Hanlin,1924-82, was a noted bibliographer and University of Iowa special collections director). Goff (1916-82) long served with the Rare Book Division of the Library of Congress and was a noted specialist in incunabula.
