This catalogue of his library consists of just over 1,200 books, broadsides and manuscripts and is arranged chronologically. Largely comprised of English-language Americana, it is the earliest catalogue devoted to the entire American continent, particularly New England. According to the Dedication, Kennett intended that the membership of the Society utilize his library to "satisfie their Curiosity and improve their Knowledge in the Affairs intrusted to them." In addition, Kennett hoped that his library serve as the "common Fund and Treasury of all Remains of that Country," i.e., deposit library for missionaries unpublished papers, letters and journals. What remained of the library, about 320 titles, was dispersed at Sotheby s in 1917. See Frederick Goff s introduction in "The Primordia of Bishop White Kennett, the First English Bibliography on America" (Washington, DC: Pan American Union, 1959). Sabin 37447; Breslauer & Folter 93.
