Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Observed and at large opened for the clearing of many obscure texts throughout the whole scripture, which texts are now added in the end of the book. Herein likewise is shown what customs the Hebrews borrowed from heathen people: and that many heathen customs originally have been unwarrantable imitations of the Hebrews. This utterly ancient and very rare book may very well be one of our oldest originals. Written in Old English, the original is faded and spotty, but in pretty good condition considering it is nearly 350 years old! Its age and content make reading it well worth the effort.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A sammelband of theological and historical works that, although issued separately, are typically found bound together due to their use as school text-books in the seventeenth century. Being: Moses and Aaron Civil And Ecclesiastical Rites Used by the Ancient Hebrewes Observed and At Large Opened, Romanae Historiae Anthologia and Archaeologiae Libri Tres It is very likely that these three works were bound together as the purpose of a school text-book. There are other examples of various editions of these works bound as one. The fifth edition of 'Moses and Aaron'. The other two works do not have edition statements. Thomas Godwyn penned 'Moses and Aaron' and 'Romanae Historiae Anthologia. 'Moses and Aaron was first published in 1625 and is an analysis of Ecclesiastical Rites used by the Ancient Hebrews. To the rear of this work there is a name of the authors cited in the book. 'Romanae Historiae' is an English exposition of Roman Antiquities. He published this work in 1614 for use by Abingdon School. This and another work by Godwyn were the only school text books on this subject for a century. To the preface Godwyn notes the difficulties he had writing this in the school room. The final work to this sammelband is by Francis Rous. It is a historical work looking at the antiquities of Ancient Greece. It looks at the government, the people, their religions, superstition, sacrifices and much more. This is the scarcer of the three works. Francis Rous was an English politician and Puritan. He wrote many theological and devotional works. In a full calf binding. Rebacked with different contemporary boards laid down. Externally, rubbed to the spine and to the extremities with loss to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned, with just the odd spots. Final leaf of 'Archaeologie Atticae' has been laid down on a new leaf due to loss at the blank bottom half of the page. Good. book.

Bound in late 19th Century full black leather decorated in gilt, black suede endpapers, with modest wear at the spine ends, tidemarks visible on the first few leaves; a very good copy. With extensive manuscript annotations on many of the printer's blank leaves and marginal notes in a contemporary or 18th Century hand. Includes several owner's names (Ana Johnson, Edward [surname illegible] dated 1736, and Thomas Goodwin dated 1736, perhaps the author's son or another relation of the author), with an intriguing note in pencil on the first leaf (verso): "Pray give this Book to Mrs. Piozzi," presumably referring to Hester Lynch Thrale (later Mrs. Piozzi), the confidante of Dr. Samuel Johnson. This association is made all the more intriguing as the blank leaf following the title page is Signed in ink: "H: M: Thrale, 1804," this being Hester Thrale's first born daughter Hester Maria "Queeney" Thrale, whom Johnson often addressed in his correspondence as "My sweet, dear, pretty, little Miss." *ESTC* no.
