First and only edition of Admiral John Henry Godfrey's privately issued autobiographical memoirs, an expansive and forthright record of his four-decade naval career. Godfrey served as Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War and was Ian Fleming's superior, widely regarded as the chief inspiration for "M". Sets are scarce: we trace only the typescripts at the National Maritime Museum and a set at UC Irvine. This set is signed in Volume II, with six parts carrying Godfrey's compliments slips. The slip in Volume V, Part II - the central volume on his work at the Naval Intelligence Division (NID) - notes its "strictly limited circulation". The volumes were issued privately and marked "Personal". The set lacks only Volume I (1902-15), Volume VIII ("Afterthoughts"), and the general index. Holdings elsewhere are fragmentary: the Bodleian lacks the index; the Imperial War Museum appears to lack Volume VIII; the British Library has only three volumes; Leeds two; and Florida State a single part. No parts are traced at auction. Described by the Imperial War Museum as a "skilful mixture of recollection and quotation", the memoirs offer one of the most detailed inside accounts of the NID and of Godfrey's professional relationship with Fleming, whom he calls "a war winner". Godfrey recounts his selection of Fleming, recommended by Sir Montague Norman and Sir Edward Peacock, and praises Fleming's "unique talents", remarking that "Ian should have been DNI and I his naval advisor". Born in 1888, Godfrey entered the Navy as a cadet in 1903, became a navigation specialist, and saw wide service before and during the First World War, including the Gallipoli campaign and subsequent work under Gough-Calthorpe in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, earning a reputation as an exceptional staff officer. He later served in the Plans Division, on the Staff College, and in senior ship commands in New Zealand, China, and the Mediterranean. Appointed Director of Naval Intelligence in February 1939, he rebuilt a neglected division into an organisation central to the war at sea: vastly expanded civilian recruitment, the fully operational OIC, integrated Bletchley Park intelligence, the creation of the ISTD at Oxford, and the firm establishment of the Joint Intelligence Committee. Godfrey's insistence on rigorous, unsentimental analysis brought early clashes with Churchill, whom he critiques at length, including a 30-page commentary on Churchill's memoirs. By mid-1942 he had alienated portions of the Joint Intelligence Committee and was removed to command the Royal Indian Navy - a decision later judged "ill-considered and unjust", and leaving him uniquely without formal wartime recognition at his rank. Highly intelligent, exacting, and often uncompromising, Godfrey nevertheless emerges as one of the most consequential intelligence chiefs of the century. The NID narrative occupies all of Volume V (c. 400 pages) and part of the "Miscellany". He closes with a characteristic apologia, invoking Fleming: "You should point out, in extenuation, that even William Shakespeare made mistakes, and that Jane Austen's rhododendrons flowered in October." Provenance: Capt. Casper Swinley (1898-1983), head of NID (1), the geographical section covering Germany and Scandinavia at the outbreak of the war. Three volumes carry his self-adhesive labels on the front wrappers with typed page references matching marginal annotations throughout. The set was perhaps loaned by Swinley to Vice-Admiral Harold Tom Baillie Grohman (1888-1978). A marginal note on Godfrey's remarks about young Admiralty civil servants has a paper-clipped slip beside it reading, in pencil, "Sometimes Old Godfrey is an ass! H.T.B.G." This is identified in another hand as Baillie Grohman, who, like Swinley, served early in China and later in the Mediterranean with the staff of GOC Middle East. Not mentioned in Cohen, Gilbert, or O'Brien. 6 vols, quarto, in 8 (250 x 194 mm), of 9 in 12. Portrait frontispiece and facsimile document to Vol. V, Part II. Original pale blue printed card wrappers, blue cloth backstrips hole-punched with linen tape ties. Around 150 pages per vol., over 1,600 pages in all, double-sided Xeroxed typescript. A little rubbed and soiled, the cloth neatly repaired, but overall a remarkably well-preserved set: very good.…
