This Italian-Swiss designer, illustrator and sculptor co-designed the Swiss Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair, but it's for major magazine front covers -- "Time," "Fortune," etc. -- that he's often remembered. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 21 August 1971 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Fine. No cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Preprinted red Giusti-designed "Bowling U.S. 8c" stamp at upper right; at lower left, Giusti signs large and bold in black fineline. Small portion of original transmittal envelope present. An uncommon autograph.

Giusti, George. 11" x 14" offset print with image on verso (taken from Fortune magazine, August 1941). George Giusti (b.1909 - d.1990) was a graphic designer trained in Zürich, Switzerland and who's images graced the covers Time, Fortune, and Holiday magazines. The A.R.P. (Air Raid Protection) referred to a division of the U.S. Office of Civilian Defense that established local councils who oversaw monitoring of air raids initially in the first world war but significantly so in World War II during the Blitz of 1940. A.R.P. units were responsible for sounding sirens in advance of bombings and following up bombed areas with a sweep to help civilians and survey damages. Light chipping along edge where it was originally detached, else near fine 11" x 14" offset print with image on verso (taken from Fortune magazine, August 1941).
