Halftitle, CXVI (=116) pages, with woodblock-initial to fist chapter; 1 blank leaf. - Slightly gilt-decorated original full-leather binding of the period over 5 raised bands with gilt-titled spine-label and colourful marbled endpapers, all edges red; 4to.(ca. 24,5 x 19,5 cm). *** FIRST AND PROBABLY ONLY EDITION OF THIS ANYNOMOUSLY PUBLISHED - AND BIBLIOPHILLY EDITED - TREATISE; LEATHERBOUND ORIGINAL, unfortunately lacking the titlepage: *) The half-title only states the maintitle without the subtitle as mentioned above referring to Julius Cesar's campaign in Gallia. The twelve chapters are titled 'Du Génie': 'De la grandeur d'Ame': 'De la Science Militaire': 'De la Connoissaince du Pays, de ses propres Forces, & des Forces de l'ennemi'(sic.): 'De la Connoissaince de la Discipline Militaire': 'De la Connoissaince des différens Sistémes de conduire une Guerre'(sic.): 'De l'Habileté à vaincre toute forte de difficultés'(sic.): 'De la Promptitude à saisir dans la Nature tous les Avantages qu'on peut y trouver': 'De l'Habileté à tirer du secours des Sciences & des Arts': 'De la Connoissaince des Nations': 'De la Science des grands Mouvemens': 'De la Connoissaince du Coeur humain'. --- Neither daes any of the few speculations about the author which can be found online much sense or can be further approved; nor had 'Asterix and Obelix' already taken their place in the historic perception of the book's main subject, which leaves it not only anonymously published but incomplete either. . . - Panels somehwat-, sharpcorners stronger rubbed; rearjoint with ca. 1-cm-, frontjoint with ca. 6-cm tear from the bottom not affecting the tightness of the binding; front-flyleaf top left with ink-offset probably of an old ownership-inscription on the once existing titlepage, halftitle top-right with another mostly erased old ownership-inscription (perhaps the titlepage was then already gone); very few pages with minimal sign of age, very last pages with small spot at bottom-edge; OVERALL A VERY GOOD COPY.
