A translation of the Naumbourg edition, the only complete version of Dumas' work, taken from Garibaldi's holograph journals and notes before he himself revised them for publication. Garibaldi contributed to Italian unification and the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. He is considered to be one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland". Albumen print on card, 63 x 105 mm, signed below the image. Carte de visite portrait of Garibaldi wearing a scarf, shirt and jacket. Inscribed on the verso to Florence de Mosenthal (1860-1927), daughter of the South African banker Julius Mosenthal, by one Riberti: "À Miss Florence De Mosenthal, 2e 8bre 7. Riberti". - Garibaldi played an important role in the fight for Italian unification ("Risorgimento"), commanding and fighting in military campaigns in South Tyrol, Lombardy, Sicily, Southern Italy, Marche and Umbria. He is also known as the "Hero of the Two Worlds" for his contributions to the Ragamuffin War in Brazil (1835-45) and the Uruguayan Civil War (1839-51) during his 14 years of exile in South America. Today, Garibaldi remains a symbol for the fight for national independence and republican ideals all around the world as well as Italy's greatest national hero.
