In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Printed camp keepsake. Small quarto. Measuring approximately 7" x 10". 88pp. Illustrated from drawings and photographs. Stapled textblock tied into limp suede wrappers with a leather cord. Eleven silver gelatin photographs (most 4½" x 2½", group photo 7" x 5") added with photo corners, and a novelt…y camp newspaper folded and taped to the rear pastedown (12" x 18", splits at folds, darkened tape repairs, good only). With six silver gelatin photographs (5¾" x 3¼") and a few pieces of ephemera laid in. Overall, just about fine. A student-produced "collective diary" of an intensive sophomore summer camp at Syracuse University's New York State College of Forestry. The camp took place May 31 through August 31, 1923, about three hours north of Syracuse. Classes, which lasted from five days to about two weeks, included Dendrology, Entomology, Silviculture, Ecology, Surveying, and Mensuration. The "diary" is a light-hearted look at what must have been a busy summer. Contents of the printed keepsake include a daily log, light verse, humorous anecdotes, photographs and drawings, pithy sayings, and a never-ending stream of inside jokes. Also, a group photo, followed by a list of the names and home states of the attendees, as well as a fold-out facsimile of their signatures. (An original print of the group photo has been inserted later in the book.) The image, which includes professors and possibly camp staff, contains 69 men. The diary has been personalized with snapshots including a group photo, pictures of campers solo and in small groups, and photos of buildings and tents. Folded and taped onto the rear pastedown is a novelty camp newspaper, the *Sucker Brook Crepe Hangar of Barber's Point, NY* (Volume 1, Number 1), dated the day after camp ended. It too is filled with humorous articles, inside jokes, ads, and an illustration of a cowboy roping a steer with men in military dress looking on. Additionally laid in are six prints of the arrangement of tents, as well as an untrimmed duplicate of the illustrated card cover. Also included are two 1927 resolutions, from the Society of American Foresters and the American Forestry Association, recommending government acquisition of a tract of land around Waterville, New Hampshire. This seems to imply that the owner of the camp log worked in forestry for at least a few years after graduating. A charming, personalized, light-hearted look at an intensive summer forestry course in 1920s New York State.
