Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: VG. First edition thus. xxxvi, 229 pages : portraits ; green full cloth with gilt lettering ; dj in mylar. One-inch tear and creasing on dj rear. Businessman Viktor F. Bracht of Düsseldorf landed at Galveston in 1845 as an agent of the Adelsverein (a German nobles' society… for colonising Texas). He lived in and owned businesses in several communities during the next few years, including New Braunfels and San Antonio. An inveterate enthusiast, he traveled extensively, saw little about Texas he didn't like, and became a cheerleader for German emigration to the state. During the European upheavals and revolutions of 1848, he wrote and published this volume as an encouragement for ordinary Germans to say "fick dich" to Europe and try their luck in America. Practicing what he preached, he spent much of the rest of his life in Texas, dying there in 1887.
