Hardcover. Zustand: New. As New. Mt John University Observatory is New Zealand's only professional research observatory for optical astronomy. John Hearnshaw, a past director of the observatory, has delved into the observatory archives to write this engaging account of Mt John's fascinating history. Alan Gilmore, the recently retired observatory superintendent, has added to this with his personal recollections, having worked at the observatory for more than 34 years. Fifty years ago, in 1965, Mt John University Observatory was founded at Lake Tekapo in the Mackenzie Basin to take advantage of the favourable conditions for astronomy. Telescopes were installed, and in 1981 a lighting ordinance helped protect the site from light pollution. Astronomical research had been thriving on Mt John for 40 years when astro-tourism started to take off, largely due to the venture company Earth & Sky. Today Mt John is both a research observatory and a mecca for stargazing astro-tourists, who come to see the pristine landscape and the amazing dark night skies. It is one of the most beautiful astronomical observatories in the world, but also a place with an often turbulent history, having been rocked by personality battles, funding shortfalls, student demonstrations and on one occasion, a destructive fire. In spite of all that, its scientific work has been an outstanding success, and Mt John's research work, especially in stellar astronomy, is known and respected around the world. Mt John - The First 50 Years: A celebration of half a century of optical astronomy at the University of Canterbury is richly illustrated, with almost 200 figures, many of them outstanding landscape and nightscape photographs taken by the acclaimed Tekapo photographer, Fraser Gunn.

Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 278 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | In the remote Pacific, working onboard the Deep Metal Explorer One, Neal Caldwell sees a flash of early morning sunlight from vessels swiftly advancing from the horizon. Betrayed by his closest friend, he encounters a sinister world as Chinese ships forcibly abduct him, along with two other crewmembers.Caldwell's meticulously guarded secret is exposed: a singular ability coupling his congenital chromesthesia-where he sees colors and patterns with sound-with sonar expertise. He is the world's foremost authority in identifying undersea vessels. His gift also enables him to precisely pinpoint nodules of rare metals on the seabed of the abyssal plain, earning the company he works for, the TransOceanic Mining Corporation, millions of dollars. The Chinese don't want rare metals. Nor do they want money. What they do want is the capability to locate US submarines. Such prowess would cause a tectonic shift in the alignment of the world's strategic nuclear powers. Neal Caldwell is the only person on the planet who can accomplish such a task. Concurrently, Neal's young son is kidnapped in San Diego. He serves as collateral to compel Neal's cooperation, forcing him to potentially become the most notorious traitor the world has known.THE COLOR OF SOUND is a 92,000-word standalone adult thriller told in first and third-person POVs. It covers everything from the molecular basis of cancer to clinical aspects of the subject, and has a lengthy bibliography designed to assist newcomers with the cancer literature. An introduction acquaints students with the biological principles of cancer and the human dimensions of the disease by considering genuine cases of cancer in fictionalized letters. Other chapters discuss cancer pathology, metastasis, carcinogenesis, genetics, oncogenes and tumor suppressors, epidemiology, and the biological basis of cancer treatment. Also included are an appendix with descriptions of common forms of cancer, a glossary of cancer-related terms and colour plates to illustrate the pathology of many of the types of cancer discussed in the text. Upper-division undergraduates with a background in freshman biology and chemistry, as well as beginning graduate students will find this a valuable text" - Publisher's description.
