Manuskript / Papierantiquität
No Binding. Zustand: Fine. Special Edition. Universal City, CA: Universal Television, 1985. First draft script for the television crime drama "Blacke's Magic" episode originally titled "A Friendly Game of Showdown," teleplay by Jackson Gillis, later aired as "For Whom the Bell Tolls" on February 26, 1986. Blue paper stock, three-hole punched and studio-brad bound in self-wrappers, with "role: Joseph Hartley" handwritten in ink on the front cover. 116 pages. Fine condition. Blue stock scripts like this were typically issued for early draft circulation within the production office. This was Eddie Bracken's copy. In this story, magician-turned-sleuth Alexander Blacke (Hal Linden) and his charmingly larcenous father Leonard (Harry Morgan) investigate the mysterious death of a bell restorer in a small community. Eddie Bracken guest-stars as Joseph Hartley, delivering a late-career television performance marked by his trademark comic warmth. "Blacke's Magic" was a short-lived NBC mystery-comedy series that debuted in January 1986, created by Richard Levinson and William Link, the Emmy-winning duo behind "Columbo" and "Murder, She Wrote." Mixing stage magic, crime-solving, and light comedy, the show paired Hal Lindenfresh off his Emmy-winning role in "Barney Miller"with Harry Morgan of "MAS*H" fame. Edd ie Bracken (19152002) was a veteran American comic actor, celebrated for leading roles in Preston Sturges' screwball comedies "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" and "Hail the Conquering Hero," and for later Broadway work in "The Seven Year Itch," "Hello, Dolly!," and "Guys and Dolls." In the 1980s he made a series of scene-stealing television appearances, including this guest role in "Blacke's Magic." Jackson C. Gillis (19162010), the episode's writer, was among the most prolific American television dramatists of the mid-20th century. A WWII intelligence officer turned screenwriter, he penned episodes for "Perry Mason" (earning the nickname "the father of Perry Mason"), "Adventures of Superman," "Lassie," "Columbo," "Hawaii Five-O," and "Knight Rider," as well as two detective novels. His work on "Blacke's Magic" displayed his signature blend of tightly woven plotting and character-driven intrigue. Early-draft television scripts on colored stock, such as this blue-paper first draft, were produced in far smaller numbers than shooting scriptsoften no more than 2540 copiesdistributed only to the writer, producers, key production staff, and occasionally network executives. Cast members typically received later white-page production drafts, and most early drafts were discarded once the final shooting script was locked. By contrast, shooting scripts might see runs of 50100 copies, circulated to the full cast and all department heads, with additional copies retained in the studio or network archives. As a result, early-draft copies like this, printed before revisions and filming, are significantly scarcer in the collector market, with a low survival rate. Fine condition with intact brads and complete pagination.
