Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The re-assessment of the character and practice of medieval kingship is a lively academic subject. In the context of the later Middle Ages, interest has been focused on aspects of the subject such as discourse on the nature and purpose of rule, the conventions of co-operation between kings and comm…unities, monarchy as spectacle, cultural expression of royal personality, and the fiscal basis of government. These are among the subject areas emphasised by the contributors to this re-assessment of Richard II. The contributors produce a rounded picture of his personality and rule by examining his contemporary reputation and key aspects of his policies. This study highlights the seriousness of the convergent problems affecting the exercise and of English kingship, and illuminates why the traditional and innovative panaceas attempted by a conventionally-minded prince resulted in his downfall. It is a study which positions the reign within the evolution of English kinship. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1. Cloth, dj. Minor shelf wear; some light scuffing to jacket. Else a bright, clean copy. Richard II (1377-1399) was deposed and probably murdered at the end of a dramatic kingship characterized by the struggle between royal authority and the power of the gre…at magnates of the land. Richard faced down the leaders of the Peasant Revolt of 1381 when aged only 14 but found the magnates much harder to vanquish. 1399 saw the nadir of his royal power in the Merciless Parliament. This attempt to oust power from the king seems to have spurred Richard into recovering the royal prerogative but the king went so far beyond 'good governance' that his final two years in power became known as the 'tyranny'. The record of his reign was muddied by hostile chroniclers such as Walsingham and the anonymous monk of Evesham, and these distortions went on to be propagated by Shakespeare, leading Henry Hallam to write, in 1818, that 'the reign of Richard II is, in a constitutional light, the most interesting part of our earlier history; and it has been the most imperfectly written.' This collection of essays by leading historians aims to redress this balance and present a more accurate version of the king's 'governance'. Drawing on scholarship from both sides of the Atlantic, the re-evaluation of Richard's reign begins by deconstructing the distortions of chroniclers and the myth of the king's insanity. It goes on to examine the personal rule of the king, the role of his council and the court, and his relations with Londoners and the provinces, with the Church and the higher nobility. Other essays go beyond England's borders to look at the European perspective on trade and warfare, and on the marriage alliance between Richard and the house of Luxembourg. Finally, scholars of literature and the fine arts examine Richard's role as the chivalrous royal patron of culture. The combined result gives a rounded portrait of this fascinating and much maligned king.

A Treatise on the Law of Idiocy and Lunacy. To Which is Subjoined an Appendix, Comprising a Selection of American Cases; In Which Some Important Subjects of This Treatise Have Been Investi…gated and New Principles Settled. Exeter, NH: Published by George Lamson, 1822. x, [2], 194 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"; 21.6 x 12.7 cm). Contemporary three-quarter sheep over paper boards, green lettering piece and blind fillets to spine. Light rubbing and a few ink spots to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, minor scuffing to spine, corners bumped and somewhat worn, front joint and hinge just starting at head, faint early owner signature in pencil (of H. Stephens) and clipped inscription ("Dr. Edwd Gillespie./ Comp./ F.W. Putnam./ July 1929") to front pastedown. Moderate toning, light foxing to some leaves, a few leaves have early marks to margins. A very good copy. $1,500. * Only American edition, based on the first London edition, 1807. Highmore, a British legal writer and solicitor, was secretary to the London Lying-In Hospital. One of the very first books on the topic, this treatise examines precedents concerning the insane and their treatment under the law. It discusses the meaning of "ideot," non compos mentis and lunacy, as well as the custody of lunatics, commission of the insane to hospitals or asylums, habeas corpus, disability and recovery of the insane, regulations of asylums and criminal cases involving the insane. Our American edition has a 27-page Appendix with valuable information on the insanity plea and the American criminal justice system at the time. It replaces that of the 1807 English edition which relates only to English courts. Dr. Edward Gillespie [1872-1949], a later owner of this copy, worked as a psychiatrist at the Binghamton State Hospital in New York from 1896 until his retirement in 1937. Formerly the New York State Inebriate Asylum, Binghamton was the first American institution designed to treat alcoholism as a mental disorder. Frederick Wallace Putnam [b.1856] was a fellow Binghamton physician and enthusiastic antiquarian collector. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 8818. Exeter, N.H.: 1822. 1st Am. ed.
