It includes a brilliant exposition depicting the patriarchal biases not merely by ordinary men and women, but even the judges, often resulting in adjudications which are gendered in nature. Tracing the gendered power dynamics from Punjabi literature, the authors go on to highlight the persistence of gendered spaces and choices along with a cultural fixation even in modern urban contexts. The articles cover the conceptual, empirical and policy issues, in the process of change and continuity in gendered societies. This volume is an outcome of the work being undertaken at the Centre for Excellence under the UGC Scheme of Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area. (jacket).…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1 Cultural History of Punjab and Haryana. 2 Designing Research: The Qualitative Style.3 Capturing the Field: Narratives and Inferences. 4 Women s Empowerment: The Ground Reality. 5 Social Panchayats: Patriarchy Writ Large. 6 Media, Public Policy and Legislation: A Gender Audit. 7 Gender Equations Today: A Cultural Fixation! Two of the most progressive states of India, Punjab and Haryana, have captured the attention of media, planners, scholars and development experts for a long time now. The most outstanding attributes which have drawn public attention are agricultural development and gender discrimination; and ironically both these have gone together, belying all presumptions including the one that economic development per se results in gender equality. This book is an outcome of a research project Cultural Fixation on Honour: A Gender Audit of Punjab and Haryana , conducted at the UGC Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area (CPEPA) at the Panjab University, Chandigarh during 2011 2017. Drawing heavily on extensive fieldwork done in twelve select villages of Punjab and Haryana, using ethnographic approach, the study unveils the ground reality, using narratives of women and men, through the prism of caste, religion, age, culture and tradition. The book brings out the lived-in experiences of women through the life cycle, drenched in the idioms of caste, religion and patriarchy. Several dimensions of gender violence, as taken for granted reality, within home and outside, are presented in various chapters. Of particular importance are the culturally defined issues governing menstruation and personal hygiene, female foeticide, political participation, domestic violence, physical mobility, trafficking in the name of marriage, child marriage, denial of equal life opportunities and decision making, and marital rape, which continue to haunt these otherwise economically prosperous states. Rich first hand data in the form of personal accounts, expose the paradox of development and gender bias in the two most forward looking states of India. (jacket).…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Fields of Sight is a unique collaboration between photographer Gauri Gill and renowned Warli artist Rajesh Vangad. The series began in early 2013 in Ganjad, Dahanu, an Adivasi village in coastal Maharashtra, India. A new visual language emerged symbiotically from Gill's initial experiences of photographing the landscape. Looking at her contact sheets, she perceived that although the camera was capturing the distinct 'chameleon-like' skin of the landscape, it was missing vital aspects of what was not apparent to the eye, yet was vividly relayed in the great mythical and experiential stories narrated to her by Vangad. The photographs by Gill, inscribed by drawings by Vangad, reconfigure the photographic site both formally as well as conceptually, to arrive at new documents of multiple truths and knowledge systems. In the act of viewing the landscape through the eyes of Vangad, Gill rekindles the need to challenge the way we see things today, what our eyes capture and what may elude them. 'As though one were photographing an old home, and the resident of the house came out, and began to speak'.; Fields of Sight ging aus der einzigartigen Zusammenarbeit der Fotografin Gauri Gill mit dem bekannten Warli-Künstler Rajesh Vangad hervor.
