Copy number '434' of an edition limited to 550 copies (of which 50, numbered 1-50, were special copies). The text pages are printed letterpress in Perpetua type by Christopher Skelton and Alan Bultitude at The September Press; the pages of the Alphabet Book are reproduced and printed offset litho by Adrian Lack at Senecio Press. The paper is Mohawk Superfine Text. Quarter red cloth over patterned paper covered boards housed in an original blue paper slipcase. Narrow Quarto, 265 x 170 mm, pp. [1-4] 5-15 [blank] [ alphabets, title page] [blank] [index] [blank] 26 pages of finely produced facsimile printed on the rectos only [colophon]. A book and slipcase in Fine condition.

Thin 8vo., [13 x 21.5 cms], original brown cloth over green patterned paper boards, titles in gilt to spine, fore and lower edges uncut. A nice copy, occasional rubbing to cloth. The two wood engraved vignettes by Gill are Physick numbers 385 & 386. Cleverdon writes that these blocks were originally engraved by Gill in 1926 for an edition of Disraeli but weren't used. The blocks later came into Cleverdon's possession who used them for this story.

Lettered canvas-backed paper-covered boards featuring a wood engraving by Gill. With a title page wood cut ('Dumb Driven Cattle', reproduced on the upper board) and a further ten wood cut illustrations and devices. Tips of corners rubbed, boards lightly chafed, and the backstrip lightly tanned. Very good. 1,500 copies were printed. Evan Gill 259.

1st Edition, proof copy [without price on front cover] but without the limitation page unsigned. Cloth backed boards a little worn,snag to spine. An early collaboration between Pepler and Gill as seen as a precursor to the S. Dominic's Press at Ditchling.

First edition (softcover). 16mo, [vi], 44pp, 3pp adverts. 13 text illustrations from engravings by Eric Gill. Original printed white card wrappers. Wrappers rubbed, ownership inscription to the half-title, contents very good. Overall, this is a good plus copy of a rare, early Gill item.

6 wood cuts and 5 triangular devices by Eric Gill. Copy no.71 of 200 numbered "proof" copies, signed by Eric Gill and Douglas Pepler. 12mo., original quarter smooth canvas with red paper covered pictorial boards, with Dumb Driven Cattle by Gill on the upper cover, a little rubbing and fading to the boards and mild spotting to endpapers, otherwise a good and bright copy. Seen as the precursor to the S. Dominic's Press with its early Gill engraving and close collaboration between Gill and Pepler. At the time this book was published, Pepler worked for the London County Council and was the organiser of the first school meals service in London. The Devil's Devices, a sociological satire, reflect his social concerns at the time and reflects on wealth and capitalism with some very interesting use of page design and printing. Printed at the Westminster Press, 441a Harrow Road, just down from our current shop.
