He established the pen name 'Gilcraft' when writing articles for The Scout and the Headquarters Gazette (scouting magazine) and several other instructional books for both adult and boy scouts. The pen name continued to be used by the scouting movement after Gidney's untimely death in 1928 (as a consequence of serious war wounds sustained in the first world war).…
