Gilbert White's important work of natural history, First published in 1789, this work is a collection of letters documenting the natural history of the area surrounding Selborne.This large paper edition is complete in two volumes, with notes from Frank Buckland, and a chapter on antiquities by Lord Selborne.Illustrated by P.H. Delamotte with engravings after drawing, and mounted photographs. With fifteen 'photographs by the carbon process' to volume I, alongside a map, and with a colour frontispiece and eight carbon photographs to volume II, alongside further vignette illustrations to both volumes. Collated, complete.The work was well received upon its publication, and has continued to be widely read well into the twentieth century.Fans of the work include the likes of Virginia Woolf, John Ruskin, Charles Darwin, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.Rebacked, with back strips laid down, central portion of publisher's cloth laid down to centre of boards, and with endpapers renewed, with the bookplate of Henry Webb to the front pastedown.It is generally considered to be a classic of nature and antiquarian writing.
