First edition. A hardback collection of lithographic sheets, with and engraved title and 16 sheets, each containing a number of caricatures. Harback with red linen spine and marbled boards. Yellow sheet (identical to title) is pasted onto the front board. There covers are slightly bumped and darkened, but sound. The engraved title page has been restored where an area of loss (not affecting illustrations) has been archivally repaired. The pages are overall in good condition, with some foxing / marking to the sheets, but sound. The final sheet has a small area of loss to the bottom edge. Most other copies we have seen reference have 15 sheets of lithographs - ours has 1-16. 33cm x 25.5cm. Gilbert Randon (1811-1884) was a French lithographer and caricaturist, born in Lyon. He began his career after serving in the cavalry, moving on to work as a lithographer, illustrator, and caricaturist. Randon was a cousin of the renowned photographer Nadar, who invited him to Paris in 1851 to contribute to well-known satirical publications like "Journal pour rire" and "Journal amusant." Throughout his career, Randon was known for his humorous depictions, particularly of the French army under the Second Empire. .

Gilbert Randon (1814-1874) fue soldado en un regimiento de caballería, convirtiéndose posteriormente en dibujante y caricaturista. En estas 50 planchas litográficas, algunas a toda página y otras dobles, relata humorísticamente la vida del soldado.

Menus frottements, coins émoussés. rares rousseurs. Gilbert Radon (1811 - 1884) réalise des lithographies pour L'Argus et le Charivari de Lyon puis il vient à Paris où il publie des albums, principalement sur le thème du troupier, aux éditions Aubert et Martinet : Alphabet militaire, Le vrai Troupier français, Ah quel plaisir d'être soldat !, Grand album du coloriste, etc. Il collabore au journal Paris ainsi qu'au Journal pour rire. Peu courant. Manque à la Bnf in-4°.

In 4 (cm 26 x 34), pp. (2) con frontespizio incisoÂ+ 20 fogli con caricature stampate in litografia al solo recto. Legatura editoriale in mezza tela con titolo oro al piatto anteriore, qualche segno di consunzione ai tagli dei piatti. Pubblicazione umoristica con illustrazioni di gusto caricaturale agli inizi del Secondo Impero del caricaturista Gilbert Randon (1814-1884). ITA.

Plon, sans date (1876), album in 4 oblong à l'italienne, carton. de l'éditeur de pleine percaline prune, plats à décors d'encadrements de filets à froid avec larges fleurons d'angle, titre et nom d'auteur dorés sur le 1er plat, 40 feuillets illustrés en noir, bon ex. sans rousseurs. Édition originale peu courante de ce charmant recueil de dessins humoristiques et caricatures militaires légendées. Gilles Randon (1814-1884), dessinateur et caricaturiste de presse, illustrateur et lithographe, collabora au "Journal pour rire" et plus tard au "Journal amusant".
