Edited by the nineteenth century cleric and author Robert Aris Willmott, this collection of poetry by James Montgomery is accompanied by illustrations by Birket Foster and other popular Victorian illustrators. James Montgomery was a Scottish born hymn writer and poet whose concern for humanitarian causes is reflected in his poetry. Considered politically inflammatory at the time, Montgomery was twice imprisoned for sedition, first in 1795 for printing a poem celebrating the fall of the Bastille, and secondly in 1796 for condemning a magistrate for using force to disperse a political protest in Sheffield. This volume contains thirty six poems, including The Wanderer of Switzerland, which addressed the French annexation of the titular nation, and The West Indies, a poem on the abolition of the slave trade. With a binder's sticker from Leighton, Son and Hodge to the rear pastedown. Recased in the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine. Leather. Zustand: Very Good. A fantastic collection of newspaper clippings of poetic and literary parodies from the latter part of the nineteenth century. Two half morocco scrapbook volumes filled with newspaper clippings of parodies and humorous poems. In total, there are 269 clippings across these two volumes: 154 to volume I, and 115 to volume II.The parodies in these volumes date between 1880 and 1884, with a significant number hand dated in ink by a prior owner.Two loosely inserted leaves provide a handwritten index of the subjects of the clippings present in these two volumes. The final leaf of the index is signed 'James Gray', indicating he was responsible for creating this scrapbook.The first collection of parodies in volume I involve retellings of Hamlet's most famous soliloquy. Thirteen clippings present parodies of 'To be or not to be', with contributions from William Garbutt, 'T.C.', John Gilbert, John Rowell Waller, R. Irving, J. S.
