Indeed, Blackstone recommends it in the section on evidence in the Commentaries for a fuller treatment of the subject. The first American edition was published in 1788. The 1805 Philadelphia edition is drawn from a three-volume work. The two omitted volumes contain additional material by Capel Lofft. Holdsworth, Sources and Literature of English Law 120. An instant classic, and highly esteemed by Blackstone, who cites and recommends it in his Commentaries, it was the standard treatise on this topic into the nineteenth century. The text was first published in Dublin in 1754 by the enterprising Sarah Cotter, who was aware that the work had been circulating through the legal world as manuscript copies for some twenty years. Lofft was the first to produce an enlarged edition, which is based on Gilbert's manuscript notes. It expanded the work by two volumes.
