Originalbroschur. Zustand: Gut. 704 S. Einband berieben und bestossen. - Professor Gilberts anthology of literary criticism is no simple collection of fragments from great critics. It is, in a way, a documentary history of literary taste, or better, a documentary history of the taste of literary critics. It contains material that is inaccessible in many university libraries and an index which ties together the various selections and gives the book a unity which most anthologies unfortunately lack. . . . (Professor George Boas in Modern Language Notes) -- A serious work of historical and critical scholarship. . . . Professor Gilbert has put us heavily in his debt, not only by his selections from the Italian critics, but by the first English translation of Aristotles Poetics to be based on Gudemans text. His bibliographies are always relevant and usually strikingly complete . . ., and his introductions and notes are unfailingly learned and suggestive. (Professor A.S. P. Woodhouse in University of Toronto Quarterly) - Introduction: The volume attempts to represent European theories of poetry from Platos time to the year 1700. Sir Philip Sidney remarked that he deserved to be pounded for straying from poetry to oratory, and I have endeavored to take warning from him by avoiding what is primarily rhetorical rather than concerned with the nature of poetry. This explains my rejection of Quintilian, Tacitus, and other such writers commonly treated in histories of literary criticism. I have also felt that details of versification, particularly when applicable to but one language, were better omitted. Similarly matters of language as such have fallen without the province I have defined; Dantes work On the Vulgar Tongue and Du Bellays well-known Defense and Illustration of the French Language are therefore not to be found here, though I do not under-estimate their importance in the history of thought relating to poetry; without respect for the vernacular and preference for it over Latin there could have been no modern literature. In making necessary choices I have endeavored to select writers who in their own day spoke for the future rather than the past, and those whose conceptions are of value at present, either in developing our own critical thought or in interpreting the most important literature of their own ages. I have also tried to choose the great rather than the small man.- Content: Plato -- Aristotle -- Horace -- Dionysius or Longinus -- Dante -- Giovanni Boccaccio -- Giangiorgio Trissino -- Sir Thomas Elyot -- Giraldi Cinthio -- Antonio Minturno -- Lodovico Castervetro -- Jacopo Manzoni -- Sir Philip Sidney -- Edmund Spenser - Torquato Tasso -- Giambattista Guarini -- Ben Jonson -- Lope de Vega -- George Chapman -- John Webster -- Thomas Heywood -- Martin Opitz -- Philip Massinger -- Pierre Corneille -- Georges de Scudéry -- John Milton -- Pierre Nicole -- John Dryden - Saint-Èvremond - Edward Phillips. It's fun reading and conveys the vim and zest it imparts to our bustling economy and its inevitable facet, office life. It starts with a sparkling tribute to the girl secretary, as she led the invasion of the sacred portals, via the machine. Bliven has a facility in enlivening what might have been dull reportage of an invention that revolutionized communication at local level. Henry Mill of England worked on the idea in 1714; William Austin Burt of Michigan was the first American to pick it up, thought it just a byproduct but patented it in 1829. After an interim of fifty two dabblers in the invention came Sholes of Milwaukee, who put it on its keys. From then on- the histories and struggles of such household names as Remington, Underwood and Smith; of Mark Twain who thought the typewriter "too curiosity breeding"; of the novel The Typewriter Girl whose doughty heroine proved she knew more ways than one. Bliven did his research at the Royal plant, so there's more about Royals than the others, but in the main it is a tribute to all models, and may pass a speed test in unexpected sales. "--Kirkus ; Contents: Girl in the office -- The wonderful writing machine -- Burt's necessity -- By Jingo!
