More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Moderate cracking to gutters and hinges causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has light tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Blackmer 623. Giffard and Newton undertook this tour in 1836, for medical reasons. They spent only a short time in each place but were able to see many including Corfu, Parnassus, Corinth, and Athens; the final chapter is on Zante. US$210.

The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Illustrated throughout with plates and a folding pedigree of the family of Viscount Palmerston. Martha, Lady Giffard (1639-1722) was an English letter writer and biographer. She travelled with her brother, William, as he brought about the Triple Alliance in 1668. In this work, Julia G. Longe explores her life and letters. Included is a preface by Judge Edward Parry. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, faded to the spine with light soiling to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Very Good. book.
