An encyclopedic specimen book of the Leipzig, Germany type foundry and printing supply house J.G. Schelter & Giesecke features, as the title indicates, all kinds of decoration for supplying printing of every type. On the title page, the firm boasts winning grand prize in 1900 in Paris (presumably at the Exposition Universelle). It is hard to do justice in a short description to the variety of styles (traditional, Jugenstil, etc.) and categories (certificates, letterheads, borders, ornaments, exotic motifs, flowers, animals, silhouettes, menus, greeting cards, vignettes humorous and otherwise, images of bicyclists, occupational symbols, portraits, Classical figures, religious art, heraldry, ships, trains, athletes, etc.) offered in this volume. Some of the examples are printed in color, most are in black-and-white. The Jugenstil cover of this copy shows minor wear and soiling. The fold-out pages at the end are all fine. This copy has a stamp from the Passmore Edwards library; St Bride's Foundation. Why on Earth did they dispose of it.…

Title with added printed label "G. Schildknecht, à Bruxelles, Représentant pour la Belgique." Green errata slip bound before title. Rust to staples; tear to folded plate; else about very good. Extensive, attractively printed type specimen book presenting primarily Antiqua and Fraktur text fonts, display typefaces, cursive cuts, decorative initials, and borders. Among the highlighted fonts are the Renaissance-Kanzlei, Athenienne, Italienne, Etienne, and Grotesk. The latter was an early linear sans-serif font first cut around 1880, which became widely used and served as inspiration for designers at the Bauhaus Dessau. Also included is a section of patterned typographic backgrounds for various private and official documents, such as currency or bonds, which are printed in light red and light blue and also include examples of printed marbling, wooden patterns, and shadow effects. Further featured is a variety of ornaments, frames, and other decorative elements, including playing cards, Gothic wreaths, and large advertising vignettes (many of them printed in color). From the point of view of visual culture and cultural history, of particular interest are various borders and vignettes on mythological and folklore subjects, often printed in color and evidence of a gradual turn toward the Art Nouveau style; as well as prize medallions, military and royal portraits and insignia, samples of wine lables and other advertising uses of typography and vignettes, allegorical vignettes, religious symbols including the stations of the cross, and a very wide array of mixed symbols such as ships, bicycles, furniture, shoes, and more. The type foundry and machine factory of J. G. Schelter and C. F. Giesecke was founded in 1819 and had become an important, internationally active concern by the 1880s. In addition to a variety of fonts, ornaments, and other printing equipment, it produced letterpress, cylinder proof, and other types of presses. It continued to thrive, with major typographers including Jan Tschichold, Arno Drescher, and Heinz Keune creating exclusive fonts for distribution, before being nationalized in 1946 and becoming part of a "state-owned enterprise" (VEB). Original pictorial wrappers on tan card stock, printed in blue and red; pp. 655-674, 653-654, 667-672 (new series), 651-652 [i.e. 30 pp.] of specimens on heavy stock of light orange, green, and blue color. Very light fading and dust-soiling to wrappers; else very good. Striking specimen of an Art Nouveau typeface credited to C. Adams, about whom we are unable to find any further information. The publisher notes: "Mostly depicting stylized natural formations, the majority of decorative pieces offer a welcome opportunity to illustrate the subject matter or simply serve as a picturesque accessory." The foundry had published another Jugendstil-inspired typeface in 1901, "Edelgotisch" by Albert Knab (1870-1948), a poster designer from the circle around Ernst Growald. Leipzig: J.G. Schelter and Giesecke, [ca. 1900]. A magnificent turn of the century type specimen book. Marginal staining to the title-page, but overall in excellent condition. Schelter and Giesecke were one of the great German type founders and survived from 1819 until 1951 when the firm was merged with several others. Intriguingly, this volume contains a number of hand-cut diacritics pasted in, as well as a stamp from the Amsterdam Type Foundry. Slight bowing to the binding but otherwise a fine copy. Rare with OCLC listing only Yale and Newberry in the U.S. …
