To write a history of economic doctrines which should not exceed the limits of a single volumes was to attempt an almost impossible task, and the authors cannot pretend that they have accomplished such a difficult feat. There is no doubt that the beginnings of economic science lie in a remoter past but the great currents of economic thought known as the ÒschoolÓ only began with the appearance of those two typical doctrines individualism and socialism in the earlier half of the nineteenth century. About the Author:- Charles Gide (1847Ð1932) was a French economist and historian of economic thought. He was a professor at the University of Bordeaux, at Montpellier, at Universit de Paris and finally at College de France. His nephew was the author Andr Gide. An initiator of the Revue d'conomie politique in 1887, Gide was a proponent of the French historical school of economics. Gide was one of the few endorsers of Lon Walras, as they shared a social philosophy, social activism, and disdain for the "Manchester-style" economics of the journalistes Charles Rist (1874Ð1955, Versailles) was a French economist.
