Professionally recased with a new matching backstrip and gilt title on a fawn lettering piece, title probably washed with a small repair affecting the N of Gibson's otherwise a VG copy with a plate entitled 'Books required by students in The University of Dublin' on the front pastedown and 'Books required by students in The Royal College of St. Patrick, Maynooth' on the rear pastedown, both lists by Cumming and Ferguson. Title continues: Together with a section on levelling exhibiting the section and cross-section of a rail-way. Also tables of latitude and departure, natural sines, logarithmic tables etc. New edition by Marcus Trotter.

First published in 1752 under the title 'A Treatise of Practical Surveying', this is the very scarce 1839 'New Edition' of Robert Gibson's instructional guide to land surveying, the first to be edited by Marcus Trotter.With an engraved title page, and three folding plates to the rear. Collated, complete.With sections dedicated to polygonometry applied to practical surveying, plane trigonometry, practical geometry and the theodolite. The latter half of the work is dedicated to 'Tables of Difference of Latitude and Departure'.With four pages of advertisements to the rear.A very scarce insight into mathematical land surveying methods in the nineteenth century, with this volume including 'various theorems which have not been in former editions'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Small splits in cloth to rear joint. Marks and discolouration to boards. Tail of front and rear hinge starting, with boards holding firm. Former owner's inscriptions to rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Loss to head of title page. Spotting and handling marks throughout, with pencil notations to first few leaves. Good. book.
