The book was first published in a different format, in the New Wessex Edition in 1976 and was reprinted throughout the 1980s. This new paperback edition is reprinted with new…introduction and textual additions, as stated on the printer's page. Edited with a two page Introduction by James Gibson. ***Very good in matt-finish illustrated card covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling (please see scans). Edges slightly rubbed and creased, especially at the corners. Light vertical reading creases to the spine, which is also gently rolled (curved) from reading. No reading lean to the binding though, and no tears. The covers are very clean and the spine colour is unfaded. Page block edges nice and clean. Internally also very good, with no previous ownership inscriptions. Internally the pages are clean, with no tears or annotations, but please note that the bottom corner tips of the first few pages are creased. ***217mm x 139mm. 1003 pages. ***'Thomas Hardy's first love was always poetry. It was not until 1898, when he was 58 years old, having already established his reputation with fourteen novels and over forty short stories, that his first book of poetry, "Wessex Poems" was published. For the final thirty years of his life he abandoned fiction and devoted himself entirely to poetry. It is a tribute to his remarkable powers of creativity that he is now not only regarded as one of the most important English novelists but is also recognized as a poet of major stature and ever increasing popularity. "The Siege of Numantia (Spanish: El cerco de Numancia) is a tragedy by Miguel de Cervantes set at the siege of Numantia, captured and razed by Scipio Aemilianus in 133 BC.
