García Márquez afirma en la introducción que "a poco más de un siglo de su invención el arte de la fotografía ha adquirido un poder de evocación y de síntesis que terminará por convertirlo en el mejor testigo de la historia"; y refiriéndose a Gianfranco Gorgoni, habla de su ojo "inquisitivo", que ha recorrido la isla como el Black Bird (un fotógrafo muy especial, el avión espía de la CIA que inspeccionaba y fotografiaba la isla cada 45 días, a 2.000 kilómetros por hora y desde 20.000 metros de altura).
