"Spiegel vande Doorluchtige, Eerlicke, Cloucke, Deuchtsame ende Verstandege Vrouwen" (Mirror of Illustrious, Honourable, Wise, Virtuous and Prudent Women), complete series of eight engravings designed by Jacob de Gheyn II and engraved by Zacharias Dolendo, originally published as illustrations to Daniel Heinsius' Spiegel vande doorluchtige vrouwen (Amsterdam, 1606). The series depicts exemplary women from classical, biblical and historical tradition whose actions embody chastity, fidelity, courage, filial devotion, wisdom and self-sacrifice. Again, very appropritae in the age of the manosphere. Issued separately by Claes Jansz. Visscher between c. 1615 and 1652, the series belongs to the celebrated humanist tradition of Exempla Virtutis Foemineae and ranks among the most attractive small-format Dutch emblematic print series of the early seventeenth century. The 8 prints include:1. De vrouwen van Weinsberg dragen hun mannen op de rug de stad uit (The women of Weinsberg carry their husbands out of the city on their backs). Na de inname van Weinsberg door koning Koenraad III mogen de inwoners meenemen wat zij kunnen dragen. De vrouwen redden hun echtgenoten door hen letterlijk op de rug de stad uit te dragen, een voorbeeld van huwelijkse trouw en vindingrijkheid. 2. Lucia steekt haar ogen uit (Lucia gouges out her eyes). De heilige Lucia offert haar schoonheid op om haar kuisheid en eer te bewaren. De voorstelling benadrukt geestelijke standvastigheid boven lichamelijke schoonheid. 3. Hippo kiest de dood boven ontering (Hippo chooses death over dishonour). Hippo verdrinkt zichzelf om haar eer te bewaren en wordt vervolgens begraven. Dit verhaal was in de renaissance een bekend voorbeeld van vrouwelijke kuisheid en morele vastberadenheid. 4. Een dochter zoogt haar moeder in de gevangenis (A daughter breastfeeds her mother in prison). De beroemde Caritas Romana. Een dochter houdt haar gevangen moeder in leven door haar heimelijk te voeden met haar eigen moedermelk. Het verhaal gold als het ultieme voorbeeld van kinderlijke liefde en filialiteit. 5. De vrouwen van Gallië verhinderen oorlog (The women of Gaul prevent war). Gallische vrouwen treden op als bemiddelaars tussen strijdende mannen en weten een bloedige oorlog te voorkomen. De prent verheerlijkt vrouwelijke wijsheid en vredestichting. 6. De vrouw uit Lacedemon toont haar kinderen aan een tapijtenweefster (The woman from Lacedaemon shows her children to a tapestry weaver). Wanneer een rijke weefster haar kostbare tapijten toont, antwoordt de Spartaanse vrouw dat haar kinderen haar grootste rijkdom zijn. Een lofzang op moederschap en burgerlijke deugd. 7. Beronica oefent wraak met een steen (Beronica exacts revenge with a stone). Beronica neemt op ingenieuze wijze wraak op de moordenaars van haar zoon. Het onderwerp werd gezien als een voorbeeld van moederlijke vastberadenheid en rechtvaardige vergelding. 8. Een vissersvrouw verdrinkt zich samen met haar ongeneeslijk zieke man in zee (A fisherman's wife drowns herself in the sea along with her terminally ill husband). Een uitzonderlijk tragisch verhaal waarin een vrouw zichzelf en haar stervende echtgenoot uit liefde van hun lijden verlost. De prent benadrukt zelfopoffering en echtelijke trouw tot in de dood.…

Contemporary Dutch limp vellum, lacking ties. Zutphen: André Ianssen d'Aelst, [ca. 1619].  A beautiful copy of this classic early 17th-century work on the use of hand weapons, a polyglot edition in quarto including English text, illustrated with woodcuts, and portable so far more practical than the lavish folio edition with engraved plates.  The publisher's preface, given in French, German, Dutch and English, is addressed to 'al souldgiours and these that take deleight in armes'. It is dated from Zutphen, 20 August 1619, and states that because the original work in folio is expensive and too big to be had on a long journey he has 'thaught fit to reduce it in such a small forme as yow heere see' but has 'not left owt anye thingh wich is in the great Booke.' He also tells us that he has divided it into three parts, 'eche own of them shal be soulde asunder'. The three parts are '1. The use of the callivres. 2. The use of the Musket. 3. The use of the Pike.' The OED defines 'calliver' thus: 'a light kind of musket or arquebus. it seems to have been the lightest portable firearm, excepting the pistol, and to have been fired without a 'rest'.' The section on muskets shows them all using a 'rest.' In the main text each page spread comprises a numbered woodcut illustration on the left hand page with a heading in French, German, Dutch and English above and a description in the same languages on the right hand page. The setting of the English text (printed in italic) is less expert than that shown in the other languages and the initial long 's' is particularly badly handled, as is punctuation. Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629) was a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius, and rapidly rose to fame as artist and engraver, and even a miniaturist. His book on the use of weapons, which obtained a privilege dated 29 May 1605, was published over the next couple of years; the French edition of the text (a translation of the original) was published in 1608. The book was a great success in this quarto polyglot format, which, one supposes was issued thus either for sound commercial reasons - as all soldiers used these weapons - or to reflect the mixed nature of mercenary armies.
