Since then it has been in a regular state of ever-increasing political turmoil and instability. This is due to the United Nations' failure to implement its Resolutions concerning the region's political future prior to British withdrawal in 1967, with Southern Arabia's strategic location at the doorstep of the world's major oil resources and its constant insecurity adding fuel to fire, the latest case being the current crisis and the launch of Operation Decisive Storm in 2015. This study may be deemed authoritarian for the period it covers from many aspects due to the pen from which its authorship flows and the high and sensitive position held by its wielder at the time of the events it covers. It should certainly prove a revealing and illuminating eye-opener about the recent political history of a region that continues to suffer from grave paucity of material for the purpose of scholarship, and about which, regardless of its past greatness and current significance and strategic importance to the world at large, so little is known.

Letter 1pp, 20x26cm, headed with the royal crest of "HH Sir Sultan Ghalib Janbaz Jung KCIE, Sultan of Shihr and Mukalla", on laid paper with Imperial Treasury De la Rue and DLR monogram and crown watermarks. Good, with light fold crease and some staining along the fold. This has Ghalib's letter in Arabic ms at the top, signed by him in English, below which is a neat contemporary looking ms translation into English as follows: "Translation: Makallah 24 Rabi el Akhar 1335 / To General William Walton / May he be preserved / After presenting my great respects I have to enquire regarding your honour's health, & hope that you are enjoying sound health. Captain Reilly came to us & informed us that you are in Aden slightly ill, wh. is going off, may God take it off. We did not know before that you were in Aden or we would have written to you. We are now presenting to you 4 cases of honey as a remembrance. Please accept the same & let us know. May you ever be guarded. Salaams. sd. Ghalib bin Awadh al Kuaiti, KCIE". Ghalib was Sultan of the Kuaiti / Quaiti State in the Hadhramaut within the Aden Protectorate from 1910 until his death in 1922. In 1916, Ghalib had entered into discussions with the Government at Aden seeking to realise his claims over parts of the Wahidi Sultanate. Brigadier (addressed here as General) William Walton is William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). As British Resident in Aden, in Feb-Mar 1915 he had proposed unsuccessfully to occupy Kamaran Island as a means to stop dhows taking telegrams, mail and money from Jiddah to the Ottoman HQ in Yemen. During 15 Nov 1915 to 16 Nov 1917, he was Brigade Commander and Commanding Movable Column, Aden, when he was mentioned in Dispatches twice. Among his earlier roles, he had worked in intelligence, been Aide de Camp to the Governor of Bombay (1895-7) and commanded the 104th Wellesley Rifles (1908-14) including service in the Persian Gulf (1911). Captain Reilly may be the long-serving Aden administrator Sir Bernard Rawdon Reilly (1882-1966), who was then a political officer. Although not stated, this letter came from the collection of William's wife and autograph collector, Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949).
