Clifford Gessler left his desk on a Honolulu newspaper to accompany an expedition to some of the remote and seldom visited islands of the Pacific. Together with his friend Kenneth Emory, the ethnologist of the expedition, he spent three months on the outlying atoll of Tepuka in the Paumotu or Dangerous Archipelago. A very good copy with some light wear to the cloth. The text is very good and clean. The jacket is good with some light soiling and some chipping to the spine tips. The expedition covered 14,000 kilometres and 56 islands, collecting data on the lives of the locals and the natural history of the islands. Clifford Franklin Gessler (1893-1979) was living in Haw…aii when he accompanied Kenneth Emory on the expedition sponsored by the Bernice P. Bishop Museum. They spent 14 weeks on Napuka Atoll in the Tuamotus and recorded 90 songs and chants and the genealogies and oral history of the people living there. "The feel of the real South Seas is in this book, written not by a professional world-tramp but by an amateur with an informed approach to native life and the sympathy and insight to record it in its simple beauty" (jacket blurb). The work was published simultaneously in the UK as The Dangerous Islands. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece, 14 plates.
