Nel 1995, gli artisti Julian Germain (UK), Patricia Azevedo e M…urilo Godoy (BR) hanno iniziato a lavorare a No Olho da Rua (In the Eye of the Street) nella città brasiliana di Belo Horizonte. La loro proposta era di mettere le macchine fotografiche nelle mani dei bambini di strada, giovani che vivono vite caotiche ai margini della società e che raramente, se non mai, erano stati fotografati o avevano fatto loro stessi delle foto. L'idea non era quella di offrire loro un accesso "supervisionato" alla fotografia, ma di dar loro la libertà di fare autonomamente le proprie foto. Cinquanta giovani hanno ricevuto le più elementari macchine fotografiche di plastica e gli è stato mostrato come usarle. Fin dall'inizio non solo hanno tratto un enorme piacere dalla fotografia, ma hanno anche prodotto immagini sorprendenti, e come risultato, il progetto è continuato da allora, anche se su base sporadica e occasionale, come e quando le risorse lo hanno permesso. Dopo 25 anni, si è accumulato un archivio fotografico unico, composto da circa 15.000 negativi a colori da 35 mm, oltre ad alcune registrazioni audio, interviste, scritti e video. Nel 1995 erano 'meninos de rua' ('ragazzi di strada') e alcuni di loro erano già genitori adolescenti. Negli anni successivi alcuni di loro si sono spostati dalla strada verso una vita più stabile, ma molti sono scomparsi, altri sono in prigione e molti sono morti per malattia, ferite o violenza. Gli autori sono ancora in contatto con 15 del gruppo originale, ora quarantenni (alcuni di loro nonni), che vivono ancora all'aperto nelle stesse strade dove sono stati incontrati originariamente.
