First Edition. Gerhart, Eugene C. America's Advocate: Robert H. Jackson. Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc, [1958]. First edition. xiii, 545 pp., frontispiece, illustrations. Original red cloth with gilt stamped spine and front cover. Author's inscription to front free endpaper. "To Professor Charles Fairman, / One of… America's great / judicial biographers, with / the esteem and admiration of / Eugene C. Gerhart / January 20, 1958". Very good, in a good dustjacket with tears to corners. $100. * In November 1945 , Robert H. Jackson stepped before the international tribunal at Nurnberg to open the prosecution of the Nazi leaders charged with war crimes. As America's advocate, as the prosecutor chosen to begin the case against these men, Robert H. Jackson was a pioneer bent on extending the frontiers of international law and justice. (Publisher's description). Charles Fairman [1897-1988] was a distinguished law professor, historian and political scientist. Mentored by Felix Frankfurter, whom he met while obtaining his S.J.D. degree at Harvard, he went on to hold a number of academic positions at Stanford University, Stanford Law School, Washington University School of Law and Harvard Law School, among other institutions. He was one of future Supreme Court justice William Rehnquist's teachers at Stanford. (Fairman's controversial views on the Fourteenth Amendment would famously prove a significant influence on Rehnquist's jurisprudence.).

Zustand: Near Fine. Typed autograph note, Signed, by the eminent U.S. diplomat George Kennan (dated September 19, 1975), together with two variant transcripts of Eric Sevareid's CBS television interview with Kennan. Former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, Kennan was the leading architect of America's policy of… containment of Soviet expansion during the Cold War. The autograph card was sent to Eugene Gerhart, Editor-in-Chief of the *New York State Bar Journal*, in response to Gerhart's letter to Kennan, asking Kennan if he could publish the CBS interview in the form of an article in the Journal. In the note Kennan writes that "CBS is preparing a text for wider distribution " Accompanying Kennan's note are typescript copies of Gerhart's two letters to Kennan, one copy of the CBS transcript of the hour-long broadcast interview (18pp.), and a typed transcription of the interview made by Gerhart's secretary (23pp.) Near fine. An important interview concerning Soviet-American relations since World War II, with a nice association to Gerhart's *New York State Bar Journal*.
