In den WarenkorbThe letter, one side on The Athenaeun note paper is regarding his picture exhibited at the R.A. and whether a photograph of the "Calais Dispatch" could be placed under it. Charles March Gere [1869 - 1957] was a painter, illustrator, stained glass and embroidery designer, associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement, a member of the Birmingham Group, who illustrated several works for the Kelmscott Press. For the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1941 he exhibited "The Last Stand at Calais Citadel, May 1940. To the immortal memory of those who stood at Calais, and by their sacrifice saved the B.E.F. at Dunkirk." from the Exhibition catalogue. The "Calais Dispatch" referred to, is probably an official dispatch addressed to the defenders of the town of Calais who suffered a siege and extensive bombardment as they helped to defend the evacuation of the B.E.F. from Dunkirk. They were eventually overwhelmed and surrendered.
